BINSAR NATURE CAMP
The sanctuary
Binsar is a small sanctuary, only 47 sq kms in area, situated in the thickly forested portion of the Himalayas of Uttranchal, at an altitude ranging from 900 to 2500 mts. The terrain is mountainous, offering good scope for invigorating treks with the forest being mainly chir pine at the lower levels and oak and rhododendron at the higher altitudes. The sanctuary lies some 400-odd kms north of New Delhi on the Moradabad-Kathgodam-Almora route, some mid-way between CorbettNational Park and Nanda Devi national Park. The nearest town is Ayarpani.
Wildlife
Although small in sanctuary terms, because of its prime location in dense montane forest, Binsar harbours a good wildlife assemblage with leopard, ghoral (goat-antelope), muntjac (barking deer), black bear, monkeys, red fox, pine marten and porcupine, amongst others. It has been declared an Important Bird Area by Birdlife International with over 200 species including tits, forktails, nuthatches, blackbirds, parakeets, laughing thrushes, magpies, eagles, woodpeckers and scores of others, recorded. Like any vibrant forest, Binsar is also home to many reptiles and innumerable invertebrates including butterflies.
