Vocal Audition Requirements

Be prepared to sing, from memory, two contrasting solo pieces from the standard art song repertoire. Examples of repertoire could include selections from the "Twenty-Four Italian Songs and Arias" collection or "The First/Second Book of SATB Solos," compiled by Joan Boytim. One musical theater piece is also permissible. One selection in a foreign language is recommended. No taped accompaniments, pop songs, or unaccompanied selections are allowed. All selections should be for solo voice with piano accompaniment. A cappella auditions, vocal lines excerpted from choral works, or accompaniment CD’s and/or tapes are not acceptable. An accompanist, however, will be provided upon request. All those who choose to use our accompanist perform their audition with no rehearsal time beforehand. Auditioners may instead choose to bring their own accompanist, if they desire. You will be evaluated on vocal potential, as well as basic musical skills and expression.

Instrumental Audition Requirements

Students should be prepared to play any major scale up to 4 flats and 4 sharps, two octaves in quarter notes and a Chromatic scale two octaves, ascending and descending. You should prepare a solo on your major instrument and at least two selected etudes or studies that display your musical abilities. The Solo should be class A or higher from your state’s Solo and Ensemble competition. One should include slow melodic examples, the other should include faster technical material.A short sight reading piece will be required.Any other prepared material such as current pieces played in band/orchestra that the applicant would like to perform.

Guitar/Bass Audition Requirements

Students should be prepared to play any major scaletwo octaves in quarter notes, ascending and descending. You should prepare two complete songs on your major instrumentin contrasting styles that display your musical abilities. A short sight reading piece will be required. Students are encouraged but not required to prepare one classical, jazz, or fingerstyle piece.Students should be able to identify notes on the staff and on the fingerboard. Singing is not permitted as part of the audition.

Scholarship details

Scholarships are to be awarded to incoming Freshmen. Current students are not eligible. There is one full scholarship available which will cover tuition for 4 (four) years. Two partial scholarships of $1,000 a year for four years are also available. Scholarships will be awarded based upon an on campus audition and interview before a committee of all full time Music faculty. Scholarship recipients will be required to remain Music majors in good academic standing in order to retain their scholarships. If their GPA falls below 2.5, they will have one semester to bring their GPA to at least 2.5. Any recipients who change to a major other than Music Education, Music Business or Music Comprehensive will immediately lose the scholarship. Recipients will be required to participate in Music Department Ensembles according to their talents and the Department's needs.
