Welcome to Dickinson High School and welcome to the study of World Geography! In world Geography, we will explore the people, places, and environments of the planets on local, regional, national, and international scales. Students will be able to describe and discuss the economic, social, political and environmental influences of geography on the past and present. By mastering this course you will have a better understanding of the world and global issues of today and how they will affect you in the future.

Grading Policies

We will have at least 2 grades per week. Grades are reported every 3 weeks either by progress report or report card. Students with a failing average at the 3 week mark conference with the teacher about their grades. There will be weekly quizzes and CBAs at the end of each 9 weeks grading period. Grading categories are as follows:

Pre AP World Geography / World Geography
Daily Work 30%
-daily grades, quizzes, homework, current events, map test, etc. / Daily Work 40%
-daily grades, quizzes, homework, etc.
Test 70%
-unit tests, projects, CBA’s / Test 60%
-unit tests, projects, CBA’s

Make-up Work Due to Absence

It is YOUR responsibility to obtain missed assignments due to absence(s).

You will have three days to complete make-up without penalty. After that 4+ late penalty will apply.

If you were present when an assignment is made or a test is announced, you will be responsible for that test/assignment ON THE DAY it is due or the day you return.

Re-testing and Quiz Corrections Procedures

Success is our main goal. That means studying, preparing and doing your best on every quiz and test. Re-testing and corrections will be allowed under the following conditions

you receive a 69 or below

You make a tutoring appointment with me within 1 week of receiving the grade

You can only earn back half of possible points on quiz corrections

Late Work

Late work is a departmental policy and applies to every Social Studies course level with the exception of AP courses which may not accept late work at all at the teacher’s discretion.

Expectations

Behavior

Any good society has a set of rules to ensure the safety and fairness of that society. Societies also must have a plan for what to do when rules are not followed. To provide a safe and positive environment for every student to experience success and meet our goals, the following rules and discipline ladder will be in effect. I know you will be a societal contributor and prove your greatness by meeting all classroom expectations.

Rules

  1. Follow all directions immediately.
  2. Work during all work times.
  3. Keep hands, feet, and objects to self.
  4. Arrive to assigned area on time with all materials, including notebook.
  5. Keep spoken and written comments classroom appropriate.

Daily Classroom Procedures and Expectations

  • Student Interactive Notebooks will be used in class regularly for student notes, graphic organizers, maps, etc.Students are expected to pick up notebooks and needed worksheets or handouts upon entering the room and be seated BEFORE the tardy bell rings.
  • Class will be facilitated using a C.H.A.M.P.S. model which will clarify procedures for talking and moving for each day. Students are expected to adhere to outlined CHAMP behaviors at all times.
  • School Policy dictates that students are not allowed to leave class the first or last 15 minutes of the period so please do not ask.
  • Students will be released from class by me NOT by the bell.

Required Materials:

Success starts with being prepared. Please be sure to bring a Pen or Pencil EVERYDAY. You will need to bring a 3 subject Spiral Notebook with pockets by August The 28th. You will use it and add to it almost daily and it will have a permanent home in the classroom.

Additionally, I ask that each student bring some classroom supplies as follows: if your last name begins with--

A - F, please bring 1 package of glue sticks

G - L, please bring 1 box of Kleenex

M - R, please bring a bottle of hand sanitizer

S - Z, Please bring 1 box of Kleenex

Special Notes:

Please be on time for class and in dress code! Students will be required to sign in for tardies and will be marked after if not in class within 15 minutes of the tardy bell. Students will be required to wear ID Badges around their necks at all times. Also, electronic devices need to be turned off and put away in the classroom. After one warning the device will be put in “cell jail” for the rest of the period. Refusal to hand over phone is grounds for immediate office referral.

This is an awesome class. I hope you will share in my enthusiasm and do your part to make it a fantastic year.
