Required Materials: 2 notebooks. You must have a small notebook to take notes on tours and to record your new vocabulary; the other notebook will be used for your classes. Class materials on checklist must be printed off the Blackboard Learn site for SPAN 3120 prior to departure/the end of the spring semester.

WHEN STAYING IN HOTELS ALWAYS LEAVE THE ROOM KEY AT THE FRONT DESKSO NO ONE IS LOCKED OUT!!! Tours/meeting times in Madrid, Valencia, optional weekend trips, etc… are listed on the AIP Calendar of Activities on Blackboard (remember the schedule is subject to change depending on availability of services) – print all documents for class/program and bring with you. The Hostal Aguilar (in Madrid, beginning of program) has air conditioning, but you must ask the front desk to turn it on.

Tuesday, May 27 Arrive Madrid, Spain - Meeting at hotel (1 hour); the pre-departure essay on: Madrid (El Palacio Real & Prado), Toledo, El Escorial/Valle de los Caídos and Valencia is due before dinner.
Wednesday, May 28 Tours of El Escorial and Valle de los Caídos
Thursday, May 29 Tours of El Palacio Real and El Museo del Prado. After the Prado tour – there will be a quiz so pay close attention! Lunch is not included today – so bring $ for a lunch with you – there will be a short break between tours during which you can eat. After the tours, you can visit nearby museums like the Museo Thyssen, the Casa Museo de Lope de Vega or the Museo Reina Sofía to see Picasso’s “Guernica.”
Friday, May 30 Tour of Toledo (the “famous sword city” of the Middle Ages)
Saturday, May 31 Check out of hostal in Madrid - late morning. TURN ROOM KEYS IN to Front Desk/Reception of hotel. Transfer to Valencia by bus; stop for lunch (included) in Alarcón; (approx 5 hours travel time) Arrive in Valencia late afternoon; we will be met by AIP representatives and host families.Remember host families are to provide: three meals a day (if you want snacks/additional food items – you must purchase them yourself), laundry done once a week; fresh linens weekly (some families do more but these are the basic requirements in their contract)
Sunday, June 1 Group Meeting at AIP. Have your host family show you how to get to the school on your maps/bus/metro (some may bring you themselves).This is a “practice run” for tomorrow morning when there will be traffic, people going to work/school; note how long it takes you to get to AIP from your host family’s home (and then add about 20-30 minutes for rush hour on the metro/bus system). After the meeting we can go to the beach – weather permitting
Monday, June 2 Orientation at AIP; oral proficiency placement testing - until mid-afternoon;

Ask your host family to pack a sack lunch for you for the trip back to Madrid.Thank-your host family. Your stay with your host family ends with breakfast Sunday, June 29th.
Saturday night, June 28th- Call and reserve a cab for Sunday morning June 29th to take you to the meeting place – the Palau de la Música – you must be there by 4:00 a.m.
Sunday, June 29th 4:00 a.m. meet at the Palau de la Música (where we first arrived and met your host families). The trip from Valencia to Madrid takes approx. 5 hours with one stop for bathrooms, beverages, snacks. Transfer to Barajas Airport in Madrid - flight to U.S.
The price for this bus trip/transfer to the airport in Madrid is included in program fees. No price adjustment will be made if you do not use these services. You are responsible for paying for a taxi (approx. 10 euros) to Palau de la Música to meet bus/group on Sun. morning 6/29. At the beginning of the program, put back 30 euros to have some cash for the last day in Spain for taxi and meals. Ask your host family to pack lunch/snack for trip to Madrid. BE ON TIME!!!!! THE BUS WILL NOT WAIT FOR YOU!!!
***PLEASE NOTE: Classes meet Monday-Thursday, 9:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. My class, SPAN 3120, meets 9:00 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. Monday – Thursday
***Printing class materials/assignments – cannot be done at AIP – all items must be printed prior to arriving in Valencia. Certain assignments (like the Informe Cultural) may be hand-written; write legibly and skip a line for double-spacing.Do not use red, pink, purple ink; makes it difficult to see corrections.
No late work will be accepted without medical documentation/communication with host family.
Grading:
Asistencia = 5% Attendance is taken every class meeting and for all tours/events. Every missed class, tour/event is a deduction of 5 points (absences are excused if medical documentation is provided or a phone call verifying illness from your host family).Every tardy is recorded as a ½ absence. 2 tardies = 1 absence. 2 points will be deducted per tardy. Once Prof. Church is in the classroom, class has begun.
Pre-departure Assignment = 10% Pre-departure essaywith details/history about the places we will visit and what you are most looking forward to seeing.Must be a minimum of 2 pages, typed, double-spaced, font 12.Must include the following information:Toledo, El Escorial/Valle de los Caídos, Madrid (El Palacio Real/Prado), and Valencia. This must be written in Spanish. This assignment is due the first night in Madrid. Points will be deducted if instructions are not followed. No late papers or papers that are not typed will be accepted.
Vocabulario = 15% Will be checked twice (dates are in syllabus). A minimum of 50 newentries each time the vocabulary notebooks are turned in. Points are deducted for missing definitions and for not numbering entries.
Participación = 10% Spanish must be used at all times. Each week in Spain has a 20 point participation/use of target language value; 5 points deducted per day if any language other than Spanish is used without first asking permission or for having cell phones out. You can also lose points for not speaking so please try; making errors is how we learn NO CELL PHONES during classes or tours!!!
Pruebas = 20% Expect a short oral quiz/prueba every day over the assigned reading for that day. Answers must be spelled correctly. The lowest quiz grade will be dropped.
Informe Cultural = 15% Prior to arriving in Spain, students will sign up for places that they will visit for their Informe Cultural. No more than 2 students may sign up to write about the same place. A list of approved places (in 3 cities) is on Blackboard as well as a museum/cultural website; you must write a (minimum) 500 words (quotes are not counted as part of the 500 words) report on the museum/site that you visit. The Rough Draft of the Informe Cultural will be due in your AIP class on Tuesday, June 10th. You will make a brief 2-3 minute presentation about your informe cultural in your AIPconversation class on Wednesday, 6/18; the final (written) copy will be due to Mrs. Church on Thurs. 6/19. You cannot write about a place the entire group visits (for example: the Prado, Lladró, etc…). If you are unsure about a topic, check with Mrs. Church to get her approval.
Five (5) points will be deducted for each of the following 4 reasons: At the top of the first page of the informe, write and circle the number of “original words” in the report; Entrance tickets must be stapled to report; Staple Grading Rubric (on Blackboard) on top; The Informe must be double-spaced. The informe must be in Spanish; it may be typed (double-spaced, size 12 font) or hand-written (legibly and double-spaced).
The AIP classes/instructors will concentrate on conversation and improving your fluency level.
Examen Final = 25% Final Exam will be Comprehensive (multiple choice, true/false, fill-in-the-blank).
