Current Issues in Canada and our World
One key component of this Civics course is to become a Global Citizen. This means that you must become an active member of our world. To become a citizen, you must be aware of the issues that are touching your world.
The world is a very big place. There are many different issues that are going on, and it is very challenging to stay on top of every one of them. Your task for this assignment is to present a current issues related to Civics to your class. (You have many different topics that you can touch on, but the common thread is that they are current issues.)
Newspapers will be your main resource. Online is fine of course J
Your issues can deal with local issues, provincial or federal issues, or you can discuss global issues (but always bringing it back to how it impacts us, or what our role is). Government should be a player in whichever issue you choose.
There are two components to this assignment:
ONE: You will be presenting your article to the class. This should take about 5 minutes. Do not read the article to the class, but summarize it and explain why you thought this article was of interest. Touch on the guidelines found in Part 2 to help you. Students will have the opportunity to ask you questions.
TWO: Hand in a summary based on the article (1/2 page typed please). This summary should:
q State who the article is about.
q What has happened?
q Where has it happened?
q When did it happen?
q Why did it happen?
q Explain why this is an issue (what is the debate? What are the different sides of this issue?)
q Who is this issue impacting?
q Is it related to our local, provincial, federal government?
