Etaray “Eddie” Vittone’s family left the small town of Speroni, Italy for America, just after the turn of the Century. Eddie’s father was killed working in the coal mines of Illinois and so Eddie’s mother relocated her 3 boys and 3 girls to California. They bought 15 acres and Eddie and his brothers worked in the family vineyard, producing grapes that they sold to local wineries. They transported the grapes by mule and Eddie had remembered that they had put an old garden hose on the rims of his bicycle because they could not afford tires. His mother never learned English but truly considered herself, fiercely, American.

Years had passed and Eddie met the love of his life, Pansy aka “Pat”, who was working in California as an airplane riveter during the war effort. As any good Italian man would do, Eddie followed love to the ends of the earth, which in this case was Cullman, Alabama. Pat returned home and she and Eddie settled in Decatur, Alabama. Together they raised children and grandchildren who treasure their family history and keep the love of great Italian food going through Vittone’s Pizzeria, which is Decatur’s most original Italian Eatery.
