Geometry Honors 3-D Shapes Project

  • Part 1:Assemble the four nets: hexagonal prism, triangular prism, cylinder, and pentagonal pyramid. Assembly should be neat and represent honors level effort and precision.
  • Part 2:Measure the dimensions of each 3-D shape to the nearest half cm. These are the dimensions you should measure with a ruler:
  • Prisms- side length of bases and height of prism
  • Pyramid- side length of base and lateral edge

*Don’t Forget- The lateral edge is not the same as the slant height!*

  • Cylinder- radius (or diameter) and height

*Think- How can I find an accurate radius?*

  • Part 3:Use the measured dimensions from Part 2 to find other dimensions of the shapes. These are the dimensions you should find using calculations.

DO NOT MEASURE THESE WITH A RULER!

  • Hexagonal Prism- apothem
  • Triangular Prism- “height” of base (if using A=1/2bh for area of base) or apothem (if using A=1/2aP for area of base)
  • Pentagonal Pyramid- apothem and slant height
  • Part 4:Use all of the info found above to calculate the surface area and volume of each of the four 3-D shapes.
  • Part 5:Find a way to present your findings and shapes in a “creative” way. For example, present them nicely on a poster, build a structure with them, make a mobile with them, “dress them up” individually, etc. BE CREATIVE!
  • Special Note:Your final product should represent honors level effort, creativity, knowledge of 3-D shapes, and a deep understanding of their SA and V formulas!

3-D Shapes Project Grading Rubric
Points Earned / Points Possible / Criteria
10 / Shapes are properly and neatly assembled.
20 / Dimensions (listed in Part 2) are measured correctly.
20 / Dimensions (listed in Part 3) are calculated correctly.
15 / Surface Areas are calculated correctly.
15 / Volumes are calculated correctly.
10 / Shapes are presented in a creative way. The “final product” includes the dimensions, surface area, and volume of each shape.
10 / Student went above and beyond with final product making it neat, colorful, and unique. Shapes are constructed with extreme precision.
