Book Description:

·  Non-fiction picture book about volcanoes. Can be used to introduce unit on how land forms.

Objectives:

·  S4L1. Students will describe the roles of organisms and the flow of energy within an ecosystem.

c. Predict how changes in the environment would affect a community (ecosystem) of organisms.

d. Predict effects on a population if some of the plants or animals in the community are scarce or if there are too many.

Brilliant Star Objectives:

·  SocioCultural: Students will be able to identify the conflicts of man (man vs. man, man vs. nature, man vs. self) and ways to settle the conflicts.

Essential Question(s):

·  How would a volcanic eruption affect a community?

Activating Strategy:

·  Begin the lesson with a Word Splash (http://www.pde.state.pa.us/reading_writing/cwp/view.asp?a=196&q=97912). On chart paper write the word Volcanoes, and then ask the students to suggest words that come to their minds as they think about volcanoes. What do you already know?

·  Read: Volcanoes! Mountains of Fire

Acquisition Lesson Activities:

·  Hold a class discussion about the effects of the Mount St. Helens eruption on the surrounding communities of that time. What might happen to the remaining animals in an area of destruction such as this? The people living there? How can people prepare for such unavoidable disasters?

·  Have small groups work together to complete the attached Volcanoes Web Quest.

·  Come back together and discuss findings as a class.

Extend/Refine Activities:

·  Students can write an informational piece on the effect volcanoes and other natural disasters might have on an environment.
