THE SAVANNAH FRIENDS OF MUSIC
2017 SUMMER MUSIC SCHOLARSHIP INSTRUCTIONS FOR APPLICANTS
(SEE APPLICATION FOLLOWING THIS DOCUMENT)
The Savannah Friends of Music (SFOM) will be awarding summer scholarships to outstanding
music students in the Savannah area. The scholarships will be for use toward tuition for a
summer camp or program of the recipient’s choice, subject to the approval of the SFOM.
Applicants must be rising ninth through twelfth graders who attend school in the Savannah area.
Students interested in applying must submit the following:
1. A letter written by the student to the judging committee discussing his or her
musical background, interests, and accomplishments. Please include
information about the summer program(s) to which you intend to apply,
including how much money you think you’ll need, and tell us why you think
the summer program(s) will enhance your musical experience.
2. A letter from your principal music teacher discussing your abilities, your
enthusiasm, your progress, and the benefits you might receive from
participating in a summer program.
3. A letter from a conductor of a band, orchestra, or choral group in which you
participate outlining your performance and cooperation within the group.
(Students who do not currently participate in such a group will need a
reference from another teacher or individual who can assess their musical
talents and accomplishments.)
4. The completed application form available from the Savannah Friends of
Music website (www.savannahfriendsofmusic.com) or enclosed with these
instructions.

APPLICATIONS AND ALL ACCOMPANYING DOCUMENTS MUST BE RECEIVED BY APRIL 18, 2017.
Judging will be done by a committee of members of the Savannah Friends of Music, and the
winners will be announced before the first of May. The judges reserve the right to request an
interview or audition with finalists. Scholarship money will be paid directly to the institutions
chosen by the students. Alternate winners will be selected. If an award winner cannot attend
his or her chosen program, the scholarship will be award to another applicant.
