A Guide to Using Electronic Resources to Support Learning in Mathematics

Introduction

There are a wide range of resources available to students to assist them in learning mathematics effectively. This guide provides an introduction to the key ones used at SFA.

Kerboodle

This is a website that may be accessed because the school pays a subscription. It is directly linked to the course and textbooks used at KS3 and KS4. The summary of access is below:

Resource / KS3 (Y7 and Y8) / KS4 (Y9 – Y11)
Electronic Text Book / Y / Y
Electronic Homework Book / N / Y
Invisipen (Video resource) / N / Y
Links to MyMaths / Y / Y

The following details will need to be entered to access this site:

Username: Each student has been provided with this.

Password: Each student has been provided with this. A students’ class teacher may reset it if necessary.

Institution Code: zg4

After entering the details above students will be asked to select from a range of courses offered by Kerboodle. In mathematics one of the following should be chosen –MyMaths for Year7 or Year 8 or Edexcel GCSE Mathematics for Year 9 to Year 11:

For students clicking on MyMaths a tab will appear:

Testbank: Students may be set assignments through Testbank.

Digital Book: Students may select the current book they are working from in school or books from other years. There are three books for each year group. Book A (Used by set 4), Book B (Used by set 2 and set 3) and Book C (Used by Set 1). Book 1 is for year 7 and book 2 is for year 8:

Select the arrows on the left / right to move through the different options. Click on the book to be accessed. The menu on the following page will appear. The buttons functions are summarised on the next page. The most useful button for navigation is the “Show Table of Contents”. Each chapter, page and topic is summarised. The section desiredcan be navigated to by clicking on it.

A copy of part of the table contents is below:

Click on the page / topic you require to navigate to that page:

This symbol indicates a direct link to the MyMaths website, which will have supporting information.

The Edexcel GCSE Maths Online resources also include Invispen, which can be accessed from the main toolbar:

Both the homework and text books have direct links to Invisipen and MyMaths. Invisipen is a resource that contains videos of worked examples and practice questions that complement and support the main text book.

This will give access to a page similar to the one below. From this a wide range of resources may be accessed and used but the results of doing these are not recorded against the student and work set for students by their teacher cannot be accessed.

To login to a students own area each student should use their individual password and username in the My portal area above.

Username: Each student has been provided with this.

Password: Each student has been provided with this. A students’ class teacher may reset it if necessary.

An example of a page linking Kerboodle to MyMaths is below:

MyMaths requires the use of Flash. If the browser being usedhas not been set up for this the following website may be visited for support: If you continue to experience problems, MyMaths customer services team may be contacted on01536 452970or at

When using MyMathssome navigation choiceswill need to be made:

Select whether KS3 or GCSE exams 2017, 2018 …. are required from the menu shown in the previous picture.

Then select study area, topic and then specific activities.

The different topics are graded to the new specification – G67 for example means Grade 6 / 7. The filter button can be used to filter to foundation or higher topics, or to work of a particular grade.

Please be aware that there are booster study packs aimed at particular grades, which may be selected from the study area as well as a games option.

Clicking on Lesson brings up a range of activities for the topic chosen:

Clicking on any number above brings up the specified activity.

Clicking on homework from the original menu will bring up a screen similar to the following:

Any student logging in will have the scores recorded against their name whilst without logging in students may practice the online homework.

Maths Watch

This is a website that may be accessed because the school pays a subscription. It contains a large number of video resources linked to the KS3 and KS4 mathematics curriculum studied at St Francis. Homework assignments may also be set on it.
