Public Outreach Strategy - Steve Kirsche

Do you have strategies for presenting to other area schools about your experience? Does your administration support this and do you have a means to handle requests?

-I will be sharing with various grade levels in my school in the fall (we have kindergarten through 8th grade).

-I am planning on presenting to teachers from across the county during one of our inservice training days next school year.

-Our school is getting a new principal for next school year. Once we return to school in August, I will discuss with her the possibility of presenting to other schools in the area.

-I am working on finding a school in New England that I could connect with while in the field an afterwards (virtually using Skype).

What strategies do you have for sharing your expedition with local media? Does your school or your researcher’s institution have a media liaison who can assist you with this job?

-I have already spoken with a reporter from the local paper, the St. Augustine Record. She did a very nice front page piece on our upcoming expedition.

-The article from the St. Augustine Record was also rerun in another smaller local paper called the St. Johns Sun.

-I have reached out to 2 TV station and one other paper, but have had interest from them.

What community groups could you present to? When and where will you present?

-I have been asked by the AAUW (American Association of University Women) to speak at one of their luncheons in the fall.

-I am hoping to present to a senior citizens group at a local retirement community, Westminster Woods. This has not been finalized yet.

-I met with a former TEA teacher and she has put in contact with the person heading up the push to create a new STEAM museum in the area. I’m not sure where this will lead, but there are lots of possibilities that can come from this connection.

What groups or clubs do you belong to? How could they learn from your PolarTREC experience?

-I am a merit badge counselor (and parent) at a local Boy Scout troop. I am trying to find out what I can do with this group.

-I am working on a proposal to present with AdeenaTeres, the other Florida teacher in PolarTREC this year, to the FAST (Florida Association of Science Teachers) conference in the fall.
