  1. 2019 VAPA Standards for California Public Schools
1. Recommendation of Members of the VAPA Standards Advisory Committee (Information/Action)
California Education Code (EC) Section 60605.13 (b) requires the Superintendent, in consultation with the Instructional Quality Commission, to select a group of experts in visual and performing arts to develop recommended revisions to the Visual and Performing Arts Standards for California Public Schools, Prekindergarten through Grade Twelve. A majority of this group of experts, the VAPA Standards Advisory Committee (VAPA SAC), shall be currentpublic school elementary or secondary classroom teachers who have aprofessional teaching credential that is valid under state law.
Per California Education Code (EC) Section 60605.13 (a) The VAPA SAC will assist in developing recommendations for revisions to the VAPA standards in the subjects of dance, theatre, music, and visual arts, and also recommend VAPA standards in the subject of media arts. Per EC Section 60605.13 (c) the National Core Arts Standards (NCAS) shall serve as the basis for the deliberations of the VAPA SAC.
The VAPA SMC will review the applications and recommend applicants for appointment to the VAPA SAC to the full IQC. Once the full IQC takes action on the VAPA SMC recommendations, those recommendations will be forwarded the SBE. The SBE will appoint VAPA SAC members at the January 2018 SBE meeting.
Information in the VAPA SAC Application Summary Table (Attachment 1) is provided to support the appointment of a VAPA SAC that has experience across all arts disciplines, including media arts, and grade spans, and includes members with knowledge of and/or experience with the NCAS.
The VAPA SACApplications and Resumes (Attachment 2) were not edited and may contain errors. Copies of the applications will also be available for public review during the IQC meeting on November 16–17, 2017.
