Words glorious words…… a mini-festival in celebration of text and spoken word at Brighton Dome

Wordsmith (28 October – 4 Nov) is a mini festival to celebrate the inspiring architects of text and spoken word programmed and hosted by Brighton Dome. From John Cooper Clarke’s legendary punk poetry or Hannah Jane Walkers’ confessional theatre show This is just to say to the intuitive folk lyrics of Diane Cluck to a pocket sized Henry V – the range of linguistic talent will, hopefully, leave you speechless.

Emerging in the late 1970s as the undisputed poet laureate of punk, Cooper Clarke’s sharp edged verse and rapid fire delivery earned him an opening slot for the The Sex Pistols and the Buzzcocks. More recent work as a DJ and in Plan B’s recent film, shows his vitality is still there as it was in his punk pomp. He’ll be at Brighton Dome on November 1.

New York based singer songwriter Diane Cluck has been a major influence in the Anti-folk scene and past collaborators include Coco Rosie, Jeffrey Lewis and Andre Herman Dune (November 2). Her lyrics and vocal harmonies have made her an inspiration for a current generation of songwriters including Laura Marling and Florence Welsh. Her set will be preceded with a set from Salena Godden, the ‘doyenne of the spoken word scene’ (BBC Radio 3)

Sharp English weapons combine with Shakespeare’s noble words to bring history to life in a pocked sized 60 minute adaptation of Henry V by all male production company Propeller, who bring the age old texts to life with their trademark enlightening style.

An intimate theatre piece will take place around a table devised for an audience of 15. Written and performed by the poet Hannah Jane Walker, This is just to say is a conversation about hope, love and winning (October 31 – November 3)

There will also be workshops for all ages .For those between age 8 and 12 there is the Little Green Pig Writing Project where you can play creative games and craft your own stories (October 31- November 3) There will also be Tales Told to the Magic Carpet for little ones aged 5-8 and their favourite grown ups (November 4 )

For adults, there will be a Sonnet in a Day workshop where participants can come along and scribe their own special 14 lines. An ideal opportunity to create something special for a wedding, christening or would simply like to learn more about this poetry form.

A Brighton favourite is also back. Speaky Spokey is renowned for presenting some of the most creative and unique performances and this special show will highlight some of the most well known artists that Speaky Spokey have had the pleasure to work with. Artists will include Gili Bloodaxe, whose poetry is combined with multi instrumental soundscapes (November 3)

A Playwright’s Industry Day (November 3) will also be held where stage and dramatic writers can meet and network with key members of the industry with the aim of developing contacts and increasing understanding.
