Public NoticeRequest for Public Document Review for Former Campion Air Station

/ Former Campion AS

Galena, AK

August 2016
The United States Air Force (USAF), in cooperation with the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation (ADEC) announce the public comment period for the revised Munitions Response Site Prioritization Protocol (referred to as “the Protocol”) tables for Munitions Response Sites (MRSs) at the Former Campion Air Station, Galena, Alaska.
In 2014, the U.S. Air Force completed a Remedial Investigation (RI) at the Suspected Former Rocket Range and the Open Burn/Open (OB/OD) Range. The RI was conducted to characterize the nature and extent of munitions and explosives of concern (MEC) and munitions constituents (MC) and to determine the subsequent risk or hazards posed to human health and the environment.
Based on the results from the RI, a Time Critical Removal Action (TCRA) was performed to remove MEC hazards that were identified at the Suspected Former Rocket Range, which was located outside of the Former Campion Air Station property. A Feasibility Study is being conducted for the OB/OD Range to determine future actions. The OB/OD Range is in the Former Campion Air Station and is still controlled by the Air Force.
The Former Campion Air Station is one of many military installations throughout the United States that will be reviewed under the Department of Defense’s Protocol. The Protocol is used to assess sites that may have unexploded ordnance, discarded military munitions or munitions constituents, and to assign priorities for any additional investigation or munitions removal that may be required. It assigns a relative priority to each historical training area based on an assessment of the overall conditions at the site. / The Protocol is not a risk assessment tool nor is it the sole mechanism used for making response decisions at sites. Generally, a site with a higher priority will be addressed before one with a lower priority; however, other factors, such as mission-driven requirements or community input may influence the Air Force sequencing decisions. The evaluation criteria, including types of munitions that may be present, ease of access to the site and number of people living near the site, are available for public review.
Copies of the Protocol tables for the OB/OD Range are located in Appendix G of the RI Report, dated November 2015, and the Protocol table for the Suspected Former Rocket Range are located in the TCRA Site Specific Final Report, dated August 2016, which are located in their entirety at:
