Poetry Project

1.  Select any two poems which you think seem to be thematically or stylistically related AND which appeal to you in some way. The poems must be written by a British author. You may not choose any poem previously studied in class. Carefully examine each poem and any accompanying background information you are able to find.

2.  Using the guidelines below prepare a creative written and visual analysis for each of your two poems. Construct this analysis for one of your poems on legal size paper (8 x 14) and for the remaining poem use a ½ sheet of white poster board. You may use clip art, computer generated borders and graphics, magazine pictures, or hand drawn elements enhanced with colored pencil, Crayola, and/or markers or a combination of these publishing tools.

* Create an alternate title for your poem.

* Display prominently a typed or hand written copy of your poem. Include the poet’s name.

* Supply definitions of any essential or unusual vocabulary critical to the understanding of the poem.

* Construct a chart which organizes the poetic devices (metaphor, simile, personification, hyperbole, paradox, etc.) found in your poem. Use line numbers to show their locations within the poem. Explain the effect of each device and discuss how each contributes to the overall meaning of the poem.

* Select, record and explain the significance of 3-5 key quotations from the poem. Be careful to quote them accurately and to explain their importance to the overall theme of the poem.

* Enhance your presentation with at least 2 symbolic drawings/graphics which visually depict the main focus of the poem.

* Write and display a one paragraph summary of your ideas about the poem. (approx. 150-200 words)

3.  You will present the poem on the poster board to the class.
