California – The GoldenState
California became a state of the USA in 1850 during the days of the gold rush. Many people came to live in Californiafrom all over the world. Since then, California has become a dynamic and interesting place. With great national parks, famous cities and beautiful beaches, California is indeed the “GoldenState”.
The mountains and many national parks of California are big and beautiful. It is here in California’s heart thatyou can findYosemiteNational Park. Yosemite was one of the first national parks in the world. People come from all over to enjoy camping, white water rafting and abseiling on the large cliffs. It has lakes, rivers and lots of bears. In addition, El Capitan in Yosemite is famous for its great climbing. People say it is scary to climb up a cliff with only a rope but they do that in Yosemite. It is for a good reason that California is famous for its national parks and super mountains.
California has some very well known cities. Although Sacramento is the capital, Los Angeles is one of the most famous. Big, with a lot of cars, Los Angeles is home to the movie business. Although the movie studios are all over the city in different locations, many people think they are in Hollywood. Tourists visit Hollywood to see the famous Mann’s Chinese Theatre where you can see the foot and hand prints of many movie stars. Another fun thing to do in Los Angeles is visit Disneyland. Open since 1955, it is one of the first “theme” parks in the world. California is lucky to have a real “star” of a city, Los Angeles.
Last, are California’s wonderful beaches. One in particular is very special, PismoBeach. Pismo is one of the few beaches where you can drive a car. There are sand dunes (big hills of sand) that people use to drive up and down in funny cars called “dune buggies”. The dune buggies crash and roll over and can go quite fast. Also on the sand dunes, people learn to hang glide. You run off the hill and fly through the air and then softly land on the beach below. Of course, finally, you can go swimming in the Pacific Ocean, surf, body board or maybe just splash around enjoying the waves. Of all of California’s beaches, Pismo is one of the best because of the many sports you can enjoy there.
California, the 31st state to join the United States, is an amazing place. Its national parks, tourist attractions in the cities and fun beaches make this state very special. With lots of sunshine and the many things to do and see, California is the place to go. It is no wonder California is called the “GoldenState”.
