EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: Families and Friends of Violent Crime Victims dba Victim Support Services (VSS) was founded in 1975 to examine the criminal justice system, give assistance to the families and friends of victims and educate the public of the impact of violent crimes on society. VSS is the oldest victim assistance organization in Washington State, and one of the nation’s first. VSSsupports and advocates for victims of crime, loved ones of homicide victims, and the families of missing persons.

In 2007 VSS became a Washington State Crime Victim Service Center. While headquartered in Everett, Washington, individual VSSservice centers are managed by Lead Victim Advocates in King (Renton), Snohomish (Everett) and Whatcom (Bellingham) Counties. In addition to those counties, direct services are provided in Skagit and Island Counties.

An additional office was established in 2014/2015 in Marysville, Washington, that provides crime victim trauma therapy services to the students, families, faculty and community that were impacted by the shooting at Marysville Pilchuck High School.

In 2015, VSS received a grant to manage a Washington Statewide Hotline that provides phone hotline services to all counties in Washington State. Through this service, crime victims across Washington State are provided immediate services 24 x 7 and are connected to services in their local communities, if appropriate.

All of our services are free and confidential. VSS is funded through volunteer hours, public and private donations and State and Federal grants administered through the office of the Office of Crime Victim Advocacy (OCVA), Department of Commerce in Olympia.

POSITION OVERVIEW: With the Board of Director’s guidance, develop and maintain a long-term strategy to achieve the Victim Support Services consistent achievement of its mission. The Executive Director is responsible for the overall;

  • Agency leadership, management,goal/strategy implementation
  • Community outreach and development
  • Fund development and fiscal management/administration

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Agency Leadership, Management and Goal/Strategy Implementation

  • Provide leadership and policy guidance for the organization.
  • Plan, manage, and direct all operations, programs, and activities of the organization to ensure alignment with the organizations grants, goals and strategies.
  • Uphold and adhere to the policies and bylaws of the organization.
  • Hire, supervise, and evaluate executive staff and accounting manager.
  • Cultivate a culture of mutual respect among the Board, staff, volunteers, and clients.
  • Maintain organization records, files, documents, archivesand confidentiality of sensitive information.
  • With the Board of Director’s guidance, develop and maintain a long-term strategy in accordance with its mission.
  • Partner and participate with the Board and committees to enable the Board to fulfill its governance function, to ensure that committees have direction and move forward appropriately and to ensure alignment with goals and strategies.
  • Implement the policy decisions and directives of the Board of Directors.
  • Report regularly to the Board of Directors to ensure the board is fully informed of all organization activitiesand developments affecting the organizations well-being.
  • Enter into contracts on behalf of the organization, with approval of the Board of Directors.

Community Outreach and Development

  • Provide outreach to the community about services provided by Victim Support Services and the crime victim service centers. Develop and provide community presentations as needed.
  • Serve as the agency’s spokesperson to other organizations, liaison with funders, the public, constituents, government partners and media.
  • Develop new relationships with business and community organizations.
  • Develop or provide input in marketing materials that reflect the message of assistance to victims, or requests for funding for the agency.
  • Responsible for providing leadership for community change and development, promoting public awareness about victim issues through public presentations, testimony, and published writings includingpublic policy advocacy, preparing and presenting testimony and serving as a liaison with media and government representatives on behalf of victims’ rights.
  • Write press releases to accurately reflect the agency’s position on critical issues.
  • Oversee maintenance to the agency’s donor database, website and Facebook.
  • Maintain involvement in victim services in order to maintain some direct contact with victims of crime and crisis.

Fund development and fiscal management/administration

  • Monitor all financial and accounting activities of the organization.
  • Approve or delegate responsibility for financial disbursements and timesheets.
  • Prepare annual budgets and submit to Board for approval.
  • Prepare financial reports for the Board communicating budget variances.
  • Engage in, coordinate, and conduct fundraising activities.
  • Plan and coordinate special (fundraising) events and solicit agency sponsorships.
  • Responsible for researching and writing or facilitating grants including adherence.
  • Maintain records of grants issued, reports of funds received and reporting mechanism for the Board of Directors to keep them current on grant status and any possible issues.
  • Maintain/update donor database and coordinate cultivation of donors.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Grant writing experience preferred.
  • Unwavering commitment to quality program.
  • Excellence in organizational management displaying consistent excellent “Leadership Qualities” in all aspects of coaching, managing and mentoring high-performance teams that garners respect from staff and board members alike.
  • Ability to set, manage and achieve strategic objectives.
  • Past success working with and for a board of directors with the ability to cultivate professional board member relationships.
  • Strong marketing, public relations, and fundraising experience with the ability to engage a wide range of stakeholders and cultures.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; a passionate communicator with excellent interpersonal and project skills.
  • Action-oriented, entrepreneurial, adaptable, and innovative approach to business planning.
  • Ability to work effectively in collaboration with diverse groups of people.
  • Passion, integrity, positive attitude, mission-driven and self-directed.

REQUIREMENTS:

(Requirements are subject to waiver by the Board as deemed appropriate):

EDUCATION: M.A preferred. B.A. or B.S. degree in social services or related field; may substitute 5 years’ experience for Degree. Non-profit experience required.

EXPERIENCE: Three years of supervisory or managerial experience and experience in social service or related field preferred.
