Social Studies: Levels of Government

government- the governing body of a nation, state, or community

executive branch- the part of state and national government that carries out laws

judicial branch- the branch of government that, through the court system, decides what laws mean and whether they obey the Constitution

legislative branch- the branch of government that makes laws

Constitution- a document that states the basic laws and ideas that a government and its people follow

Congress- the legislative branch of the U.S. government made up of the House of Representatives and the Senate

Supreme Court- the highest judicial court in a country or state

President- the elected head of a republican country

taxes- fees that citizens and others pay to the government

scarcity- not having enough resources to provide all the things people want

Science: Heredity & Life Cycles

seed- a structure that can grow into a new plant

embryo- a young plant

flower- a plant structure that makes seeds

pollination- the movement of pollen from the male part of a flower to the female part

fruit- a plant structure that holds seeds

cone- a plant structure that makes seeds

life cycle- how a certain kind of organism, grows, changes, and reproduces

life stages- the steps in an organism’s life cycle

egg- a structure that protects and feeds young of certain kinds of animals

larva- the stage in some insects’ life cycles which comes after hatching

pupa- the stage of some insects’ life cycles before becoming an adult

metamorphosis- a series of very different body forms

heredity- the passing of traits from parents to young

inherited trait- a characteristic that comes from parents

learned trait- something you are taught or learn with experience

trait- a characteristic or feature of a living thing

offspring- an organism’s young
