COURSE DESCRIPTION: This one year course is the study of American history from the time of early North American inhabitants to the present. Students will be introduced to the people and events that contributed to the development of our nation as they explore the impact of economic, political, social, and technological ideas. The history of Nevada will be integrated throughout the year.
COURSE GOALS:
- To understand the significant social, cultural, economic, and political changes in the United States.
- To appreciate the contributions made by diverse cultures to the U.S.
- To examine the concepts of tolerance and respect.
- To recognize the value of responsible citizenship.
- To develop skills necessary to use informational tools.
- To identify causes and effects of major conflicts involving the U.S.

EVALUATION AND GRADING SYSTEM: Report card grades are determined on a percentage basis. Tests, quizzes, essays and some projects:50%;Class work, major assignments: 30%. Daily Assignments: 20%. All assessments are weighted according to content.
SEMESTER GRADE = 2 quarter grades (45% each) plus the semester exam (10%):45+45+10=100%.
STUDENT PROGRESS: Parents and guardians may access student progress online by using the Parent Link Infinite Campus program. A variety of student data is available on this website, including a weekly update of your child’s grades. You may contact the office for information. They will provide you with a personal user ID number and a password. The web address:
To help your student stay on track, you may also access the teacher’s web page. This page will provide information regarding daily lessons and long-term projects. This page can be accessed through the Hyde Park website or by going to Students are encouraged to dialogue with their teachers on an individual basis if there are any issues that may prevent them from succeeding. A Homework Club will be offered 3 days a week for extra support.
ASSIGNMENTS AND HOMEWORK: Homework is an important component of the learning experience. Homework is usually assigned daily, with the possible exception of Friday. Assignments are posted daily in class and on the teacher’s web page. Late work will be accepted for a period of two weeks. However, full or partial credit will be given at the discretion of the teacher according to the assignment. Late work due to excused absences will be accepted for a period of 3 days for each missed day without penalty. It is the student’s responsibility to obtain absent work by speaking with the teacher. Extended medical absences and/or prearranged absences must be arranged through the attendance office. The work for a prearranged absence must be returned within three days of the absence. If student work is not completed within three days, then the absence will become unapproved. Extra credit is given only for enrichment activities as determined by the teacher. No extra credit will be given for missed work, or to increase a student’s grade. Academic dishonesty will not be tolerated. If a student is suspected of cheating, the assignment will be invalid and the parents will be notified. A second offense or continued dishonesty may result in additional consequences, such as a conference with the Magnet Program Coordinator or action through the Dean’s office.
CLASSROOM BEHAVIORAL EXPECTATIONS:
Classroom rules are designed to provide an environment conducive to learning.
1.) Listen carefully and follow directions.
2.) Be prepared for class.
3.) School regulations will be enforced at all times.
4.) Show respect to everyone and to the learning process.
TARDY POLICY:
Being tardy is unacceptable. All students must be in class and ready to work when the bell rings. Teachers will follow the progressive Hyde Park tardy policy. One tardy is after school detention. More than 3 will result in further disciplinary action by the administration.
Consequences for inappropriate behavior are:
1st infraction ...... verbal warning
2nd infraction ...... student/teacher conference or written notification
3rd infraction ...... in class or out of class time-out
4th infraction ...... parent/teacher conference
5th infraction ……………..Dean referral
The teachers reserve the right to skip or repeat any of these steps as they deem necessary, or as the situation requires.
CITIZENSHIP: Three main qualities comprise citizenship on the Hyde Park campus. They are: Responsibility, Respect, and Integrity.
RESPONSIBILITY: I participate actively in my own learning. I am ready to learn. I follow school rules and the Panther Principles.
RESPECT: I respect others and myself and the learning process. I respect the learning environment and materials.
INTEGRITY: I am honest with my schoolwork, others, and myself at school. I am helpful in my school community. I take pride in my work and behavior.
Citizenship grades, based on the above qualities, will be given according to the following guidelines:
Outstanding – Always, Almost Always Needs Improvement - Seldom
Satisfactory – Usually Unsatisfactory – Rarely/Never
BULLYING:
1. Under NRS 388.122, “bullying” means written, verbal or electronic expressions or physical acts or gestures, or any combination thereof, that are directed at a person or group of persons, or a single severe and willful act or expression that is directed at a person or group of persons, and:
a. Have the effect of:
(1) Physically harming a person or damaging the property of a person; or
(2) Placing a person in reasonable fear of physical harm to the person or damage to the property of
the person; or
b. Interfere with the rights of a person by:
(1) Creating an intimidating or hostile educational environment for the person; or
(2) Substantially interfering with the academic performance of a student or the ability of the person to participate in or benefit from services, activities or privileges provided by a school;
