Summer Student Opportunity
Interpretation Assistant, Gulf Islands National Park Reserve
This is an anticipatory position for 1-2 students to be staffed through this competition, subject to funding
Students are required to be returning to school in the fall.
Gulf Islands National Park Reserve is seeking self-motivated, outgoing and creative individuals to be a part of a collaborative project between the Shaw Centre for the Salish Sea (SCSS) and Parks Canada. The interpretation assistant’s role is to inform, educate and inspire visitors about the wonders of the Salish Sea ecosystem and to promote Gulf Islands National Park Reserve (GINPR) and Parks Canada.
Student Duties
Working within the GINPR Visitor Experience department under the direction of the interpretation team, and in cooperation with SCSS staff, you will play a key role in the delivery of this project through the following:
Represent Parks Canada at a branded location at the SCSS: promote Parks Canada visitor opportunities and products, raise awareness about Parks Canada and make history and nature engaging and exciting through table top games and activities;
Deliver roving and scheduled interpretive programs at the SCSS and potentially other Sidney locations (Sidney market, Sidney Spit dock, etc.);
Support our general interpretive offers through: creating content for our social media platforms, assisting with in-park special events, programs and products;
Work collaboratively with a variety of staff (both Parks Canada and SCSS).
We are looking for students that possess:
Strong communication skills and experience in public speaking
Excellent interpersonal abilities (friendliness, tact, responsiveness, enthusiasm)
A working knowledge of local flora and fauna
Organizational skills (multitasking, planning, stocking supplies)
The ability to work independently to meet goals and expectations
Creativity and initiative
Judgment
Mandatory Conditions of Employment:
Willingness to wear a Parks Canada uniform
Willingness to work varied hours (evenings, weekends)
Willingness to work outdoors, sometimes in adverse weather conditions
Possession of a valid Class 5 Drivers License
Willingness to carry and set up large and heavy equipment including tables and tents
Language Requirements:
English
French is not required but preference may be given to bilingual candidates
Term: Approx 16 weeks, May to August, 2017
Job closes on: February 15, 2017 at 4:00 pm
Approx. salary range: $12.77- $15.63 per hour (based on education and experience)
Hours of work: 37.5 hours per week
