John Proctor and Mary Warren arrive in court, prepared to challenge the accusations made by Abigail and the other girls.
Giles and Francis interrupt the court to declare that they have evidence to show their wives are innocent.
Mary confesses that she and the other girls only pretended to see spirits and faint. But, Danforth thinks her statement is a plot by Proctor to overthrow the court.
Danforth questions Abigail, but she denies Mary Warren’s charge.
To be sure Mary is telling the truth, Danforth asks Mary to pretend to faint. When she cannot faint on demand, he concludes that Mary is lying, and Abigail is telling the truth.
When Danforth believes Abigail, Proctor is frustrated and he publicly admits his affair with Abigail. He defends his wife by saying that Elizabeth never lies.
To be sure Proctor is telling the truth, Danforth calls Elizabeth. When asked why she fired Abigail, Elizabeth lies to hide John and Abigail’s affair.
Ironically, Elizabeth’s lie gets Proctor in trouble and he is arrested for lying in the court.
In the end, Abigail starts a drama by saying Mary’s spirit is trying to hurt her and the other girls. To save herself, Mary suddenly changes sides and says that Proctor is the liar and Abigail and the other girls have been truthful all along.
