Head of Geography

The Post

We wish to recruit an inspirational Head of Geography to lead our wonderful geography department of hard working, friendly and enthusiastic staff and students. The successful candidate will be forward thinking and positive, demonstrating a commitment to high quality teaching and learning. They will lead a team of staff who wish to inspire students to enjoy and succeed in Geography.

The Department

The Geography Department is one of the school’s many outstanding departments and is very highly regarded by students, parents and other staff. It is one of the most popular subjects at both GCSE and A Level. There are six teachers including the Head of Geography, some of whom hold other responsibilities in the school. The post becomes available due to the request of the current Head of Geography to step down after returning from maternity leave. The department is very well resourced and well-organised. Several teachers have trained in the department over recent years and other schools look to the Beaumont geography department for support.

The Curriculum

KS3:

Geography is taught to all students in two 45-minute periods per week during KS3. The department prides itself on having up to date, relevant and exciting schemes of work. The topics we have chosen will allow students to learn about current geographical issues following an enquiry based approach and allow the department to implement a range of teaching and learning strategies. With the use of the school’s Curriculum Enrichment Days we offer fieldwork visits to years 7 and 9.

KS4:

Geography is offered within the option choices and there are four or five groups in each of Years 10 and 11. Students complete the Edexcel B specification. There was an established fieldwork trip to Norfolk for Year 11 pupils to support controlled assessment which, unfortunately, has been replaced by a one day trip for Year 10 due to the requirements of the new specification that every student must have access to the same fieldwork opportunities.

Post 16:

There are three groups in each of Years 12 and 13. We teach the Edexcel specification. As a part of this choice, we run a fieldwork visit to Dorset. Additionally, we run a visit to Iceland every two years during the Easter holidays.

Large numbers of students opt to take Geography at GCSE and A-Level and we feel this is mainly down to students enjoying their lessons and the good classroom relationships between staff and students.

Results

Geography is one of the most successful departments in the school and the excellent results contribute significantly to the school’s outcomes for Attainment 8 (5.9), Progress 8 (0.39) and e-bacc (55%). At A Level results are consistently high with significant numbers of students choosing to study geography and related subjects at university.
