WHMIS
CLB Level: Ph 2Essential Skills Focus:Document Use (Read and understand signs/symbols),Continuous Learning(understand importance of training, upgrading), Oral Communication (give information)
Task: Recognize all WHMIS symbols and understand the danger related to each symbol
Purpose: Students will
- Read and understand WHMIS symbols
- Be able to say what happens if you do not follow the safety procedures related to each symbol
Learning Style: Auditory, kinaesthetic, visual
Time: 1-2 lessons / Method:
- Make posters with the symbols. So you can use it to review the symbols in following lessons.
- Using the checklist, show the students the video, stopping after each symbol is presented.
- Ask students to check off each symbol as you stop and discuss with them about what is dangerous about each symbol.
- Using the posters, check if students remember the names of the symbols, but more important what is dangerous about them.
- Using the flashcards below, have students match symbols, name of symbols and danger.
- Game 1: Using the flashcards (cut into separate pieces), students play a memory game. They might at first use only the symbols and the names. Then another time they can play a game using the symbol and the danger. To make it more challenging they can play using the three pieces, having to find the 3 to get a match.
- Game 2: Divide the class into small groups. Each group has a complete set of WHMIS symbols to review. After they review together, they line up across from the whiteboard. Only the first students in each line can run to the board and draw the right symbol as they hear the teacher say the name or danger related to a specific symbol. The group that draws the right symbol, scores a point.
Every beginning of class, play a game to review the symbols. Students can play a matching game or memory game. They can match two symbols or a symbol and its name. After they have memorized the symbols, give them the same checklist they used in the beginning. Now they have to check the symbols they believe they know the name and what is dangerous about it.
Debrief/Transfer:
Ask students where they can find symbols like this.
Have them make a list of possible places in the
community as well as jobs in which knowing the
WHMIS symbols would help keep them safe. Encourage
students to find products at home that have symbols like
WHMIS and if possible bring them to school for further
discussion.
