POSITION SUMMARY

Occidental College is embarking upon phase two of a multi-year strategic plan to establish itself as a national leader in providing students with career and professional development support. As part of the college’s plan, a new, state-of-the art Hameetman Career Center (HCC) opened in April 2016. The HCC is home to Career Services; Pre-Health Advising; and National and International Awards. Career Servicesexecutes a comprehensive strategy to deliver best-in-class career development support programs and events to Occidental College students and alumni. These best-in-class services include contemporary career readiness programs for all students;donor-funded internship programs;and targeted employer and alumni relations programs.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Reporting to the Senior Associate Director, Employer and Alumni Engagement Strategies, the Assistant Director, Internships and Professional Developmentwill be responsible for the following:

  • Developing and managing a broad range of internship and professional development programs that facilitate career readiness, experiential learning, and professional development for undergraduate liberal arts students.
  • Managingthe college’s credit-bearing internship programs; the flagship InternLA summer internship program; the InternAway program; and other structured internship programs.
  • Designing and executing the IMPACT learning course for the InternLA program.
  • Establishing and maintaining strong relationships with employer partnership.
  • Providing innovative and creative ideas to expand internships and professional development opportunities for students throughout Los Angeles and nationwide.
  • Serving as the point of contact for internship related questions from students and other key stakeholders.
  • Providing advice and counseling to students regarding internship job search, interviewing skills, and resume writing.
  • Leading and managing internship readiness training and workshops, including development of course content.
  • Collaborating with other Career Services staff to develop and execute internship and experiential learning recruiting activities.
  • Partnering with the Alumni and Parent Relations and Institutional Advancement teams to quickly and effectively respond to alumni requests to hire students for internships and professional development opportunities.
  • Developing employer and alumni outreach and engagement strategies to expand existing programs and to increase the number of employer-paid internship, professional development and experiential learning programs.
  • Creating, tracking and analyzing metrics to ensure annual performance goals are achieved.
  • Analyzing peer group institutions programs to ensure that programs position students for career success.
  • Representing Occidental College at local and national internships and career services organizations, as needed.
  • Maintaining and updating students and other Career Services staff on new and updated policies and procedures related to internships,experiential learning, and professional development.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s degree preferred in counseling; human resources;higher education;organizational management; leadership; or a related field or liberal arts.
  • At least 3-5 years of experience in corporate recruiting/talent acquisition;preferably managing or recruiting for medium-to-large-scale corporate internship programs.
  • Alternatively, at least 5 years of experience managinginternship programs at a college or university with a liberal arts degree focus.
  • Have an established network of employer contacts in the Los Angeles area and throughout the U.S. especially in finance and consulting.
  • Demonstrated competency in translating employer hiring needs and interview requirements to students and career counselors.
  • Experience managing a budget, desired.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and presentation skills with an ability to develop and sustain strong relationships and partnerships with employers; alumni; human resources professionals; fundraising professionals; donors; admissions personnel; faculty;other key members of the campus community.
  • Strong competency in all aspects of the career development process.
  • Strong oral and written communications skills.
  • Team player with a strong ability to work in a collaborative, high performance team environment.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks with ease.
  • Exhibit professional demeanor and demonstrate a strong understanding of business.
  • Strong proficiency utilizing MS Office, especially Excel and PowerPoint; database management software; desktop publishing software; and internet research.
