CALL FOR PRESENTATIONS

GENERAL INFORMATION

The Rutgers School of Social Work is pleased to announce a Call for Presentations for a conference on challenging racial disparities which will be held on June 7, 2017 in Piscataway, NJ.

Conference Vision

Designed with the practitioner in mind, the conference will provide social workers and allied professionals with a dynamic learning opportunity on the topic of racial disparities.Through presentations and interaction, attendees will leave with enhanced knowledge and skills to address racial disparity issues in their practice with clients, organizations, and communities.

Conference Format

The full-day conference will be held onWednesday, June 7, 2017 from 9:00am-3:30pm at the Busch Campus Center on the Rutgers Busch Campus in Piscataway NJ. The primary audience will be approximately 300 social workers and social work students along with interested members from other social service professions. This full-day conference will begin with Dr. Carl Hart from Columbia University delivering a keynote address followed by a morning panel discussion. In the afternoon, multiple one-hour breakout workshops will be offered. Conversation and an exchanges of ideas with the audience will be an integral part of the conference.

Selection Criteria and Submission Information

The Call for Presentations encourages interested presenters to submit proposals for the afternoon one-hour workshops(1:15pm-2:15pm & 2:30pm-3:30pm) on issues of concern to social workers and human service professionals working in varied settings. Topics must enhance the skills and knowledge in understanding and addressing an aspect of race or racial disparities. The workshop content must be relevant to the practicing social worker and can include topics such as: model programs that effectively address racial issues, skill building workshops, and practice approaches that address racial issues based on research or theory.Presentations may be delivered by a panel or a single presenter. Workshop size will vary with a maximum of 85 in some workshops.

  • Proposals that are deemed to be empowering and useful to everyday social work practice will be given preference in the selection process.
  • Proposals should reflect the limited one-hour timeframe of the breakout session and not seek to be overly comprehensive—instead seeking to achieve maximum impact on a key learning goal or two.
  • Incomplete proposals will be returned with an opportunity for resubmission.
  • Communication will be directed to the presenter designated on the proposal’scover page.
  • The conference is unable to provide honorariaor travel expense reimbursement for any presenter submitting a proposal.

Criteria for Presenters

  1. Experience in the particular area of instruction.
  2. A graduate degree in a relevant practice area held by at least one of the presenters.
  3. Certified or licensed (unless exempt) to practiceby at least one of the presenters in the content area in which presenting (i.e. social work, psychology, psychiatry, marriage and family therapy, alcohol and drug counseling, counseling, medicine, or law) or be a faculty member of an undergraduate or graduate college or university.

Notification of whether or not your proposal has been selected will be mailed byMarch 15, 2017.

PROPOSAL DESCRIPTION

Fill in text below each question, save as a new document, and submit as instructed below.

  1. One-page abstract (approximately 300 words) which describes the content of your proposed presentation. Clearly state the proposed workshop’s relevance to racial disparities and current practice or knowledge. List one or two goals of the workshop indicating specific skills that participants will attain. If your proposed workshop is clinical in nature, provide a description of the clinical content.
  1. Clearly state the teaching methods you will use (e.g. lecture, PowerPoint, role play, video, activities etc.). Please be aware of time limitations with the short one-hour breakout sessions.
  1. Brochure Description: An engaging 2-3 sentence description of the workshop, which will be used for the conference registration form and booklet.
  1. Provide a short statementon each presenter(maximum 150-words each) that includes:
  2. A brief biographical statement
  3. A statement describing qualifications to instruct on the proposal topic
  4. A concise description of prior presenting experience
  5. Separately attach a resume for each presenter which includes name, education, license, affiliations, address, email, and telephone number.

  2. Include a current resume for each presenter.
  3. Notification of receipt of the proposal and notification of the decision will be made to the email address on the proposal.
