Dear Colleague,
This month’s NMDA news contains all the latest motorcycle information, plus other issues facing the sector.
It is extremely positive to see that the motorcycle market inJune marked another great month with sales up 6.3%.
This month’s news also contains some concerning figures relating to motorcycle theft. We had hoped that following the introduction of the ‘Master scheme’, theft would be significantly reduced, however this doesn’t seem to be the case.
On a brighter note, we are pleased to announce that our latest aftersales and used motorcycle standards have now been finalised. Please see today’s news for more details.
I hope you enjoy this latest update.

MOTORCYCLE MARKET CONTINUES TO GROW
June marked another good month for the motorcycle market with sales up 6.3%.
Overall for the year-to-date the total power-two-wheeler market was up 11% – that’s 5348 more bikes sold than in 2013. Sales of most cc/power ranges of bikes were significantly high, with the only exceptions being the under 50cc which were down -4.5% on last year. Also, bikes from the 126-650cc range showed a minimal growth of 1.8% year to date – an increase of only 134 more bikes.
Most sectors in the style criteria did well with the 'naked' category showing the greatest demand with an increase of 37.3% so far this year.
There is a clear indication that the experienced riders/buyers are returning to the market. This is evident due to the sales of large capacity machines which saw registrations up 19.6% in the 651-1000cc sector and 17.9% in machines over 1000cc. We hope to see this trend continue through the second half of 2014.

RIDING AN UNTAXED MOTORCYCLE AFTER THE ABOLITION OF THE TAX DISC

With the abolition of the paper tax disc from 1 October 2014 motorcycles will no longer be required to display a paper tax disc. Motorcycle dealers will be at significant risk during road tests or whilst vehicles are collected or delivered, as driving an untaxed vehicle will be a criminal offence and will leave employees and businesses at risk of prosecution.

WHAT THIS MEANS TO YOU

To ride or keep a motorcycle on the road you will still need to get vehicle tax and DVLA will still send you a renewal reminder when your motorcycle tax is due to expire. This applies to all types of vehicles including those that are exempt from payment of road tax.

BUYING A MOTORCYCLE

From 1 October, when you buy a motorcycle, the road tax will no longer be transferred with the bike. You will need to get new road tax before you can use the vehicle.
You can tax the motorcycle using the New Keeper Supplement (V5C/2) part of the vehicle registration certificate (V5C) online or by phone - 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Alternatively, you may wish to visit a Post Office® branch.

SELLING A MOTORCYCLE

If you sell a motorcycle after 1 October and you have notified DVLA, you will automatically get a refund for any full calendar months left on the road tax.

VEHICLE TAX REFUNDS

You will no longer need to make a separate application for a refund of vehicle tax. DVLA will automatically issue a refund when a notification is received from the person named on DVLA vehicle register that the:
  • motorcycle has been sold or transferred
  • motorcycle has been scrapped at an Automated Treatment Facility
  • motorcycle has been exported
  • motorcycle has been stolen
  • motorcycle has been removed from the road and the person on the vehicle register has made a Statutory Off Road Notification (SORN)
  • person on the vehicle register has changed the tax class on the vehicle to an exempt duty tax class

CHECKING THE TAX STATUS OF A MOTORCYCLE

You can check the tax status of any vehicle online,
The information you need to activate your enquiry is:
  • Registration number
  • Make of motorcycle
In addition, with the driver/rider licence counter-part being discontinued from April 2015, and the ones still in existence over the next 10 years (maximum), NMDA members will need to know that employees and customer riders of demonstration or loan motorcycles have a valid licence and are not disqualified through penalty points. The DVLA have set up a pilot on-line checking system that is likely to be confirmed after further trialling and Government approval. This can be found at
The information you need to activate your enquiry is:
  • Driving licence number
  • National insurance number
  • Post code on licence
HELP STOP MOTORCYCLE THEFT
For your information there is now an e-petition calling on the Government to do more about motorcycle theft. It needs 100,000 signatures before it may be conserved for debate in Parliament.

MOTORCYCLE THEFT AND RECOVERY
The authorities have indicated that thieves have become aware of bikes protected by the ‘Master’ scheme and are stealing older machines and also scooters from metropolitan areas.
