LEVELS OF ATTAINMENT – VISITORS
SOME GUIDANCE
LEVEL 1
Pupils will be able to recognise the Annunciation, Visitation and Nativity stories as religious stories. (AT1i)
They will be able to talk about their experiences and feelings around preparing for visitors and Christmas. (AT2i)
They will be able to recognise and name religious symbols of Advent such as Advent wreath, Candle, Calendar, and Jesse Tree. (AT1ii)
They will be able to recognise and name ways in which Christians prepare for Christmas during Advent. (AT1iii)
They will be able to say what they wonder about preparing for visitors and preparing for Christmas. (AT2ii)
LEVEL 2
Pupils will be able to retell the Annunciation, Visitation and Nativity stories in their own words. (AT1i)
They will know these stories speak of the coming of Jesus, God’s son, to the world. (AT1i)
They will be able to use religious words and phrases to describe the Advent Wreath and other Advent and Christmas religious symbols and actions. (AT1ii)
They will be able to describe ways in which Christians prepare during Advent to welcome Jesus at Christmas. (AT1iii)
They will be able to ask and respond to questions about preparing for visitors and Christmas. (AT2i)
They will be able to ask questions about what they and others wonder about visitors, Advent and Christmasand realise that some of these questions are difficult to answer. (AT2ii)
LEVEL 3
Pupils will be able to make links between some Scripture passages and the belief in Jesus’ coming at Christmas and the need to prepare during Advent. (AT1i)
They will be able to give reasons for the symbols used on the Advent Wreath and will know what an Advent Liturgy might look like, using a developing religious vocabulary. (AT1ii)
They will be able to give reasons for traditional and seasonal celebrations and activities during Advent and Christmas in everyday and Church life. (AT1iii)
They will be able to make links to show how feelings and beliefs about visitors, Advent and Christmasaffect their behaviour and that of others. (AT2i)
They will be able to talk about and share with others the difficult questions they have around the demands and joys of visitors, Advent and Christmas and then compare their findings. (AT2ii)
Level 4
Pupils will be able to show understanding ofAdvent being a season to prepare for Christmas and the coming of Jesus, linking Scripture, ideas, feelings and experiences. (AT1i)
They will be able to use religious terms to show understanding of how to prepare and lead an Advent Liturgy for class/school. (AT1ii)
They will understand the connection between the Scripture passages explored and some of the Mysteries of the Rosary and the Benedictus and Angelus. (AT1ii)
They will show understanding of how belief in the coming of Jesusand the preparation we make during Advent for Christmas shapes the lives of Christians. (AT1iii)
They will be able to show how belief in the coming of Jesus informs their decisions and those of others. (AT2i)
They will be able to engage with and respond to questions such as ‘Why is Advent/Christmas important to Christians?’ in the light of their learning. (AT2ii)
Level 5
Pupils will be able to source belief in the Incarnation in Scripture and explain how this belief arose. (AT1i)
They will be able to describe and explain the meaning and purpose of, for example, an Advent Liturgy, a Reconciliation Service and a quiet prayer time in Advent. (AT1ii)
They will be able to identify similarities and differences between a Christian and non-believers response to preparing forand celebrating Christmas. (AT1iii)
They will be able to explain what beliefs and values inspire and influence what they and others do during Advent and Christmas. (AT2i)
They will be able to show how belief in the coming of Jesus at Christmasgives some explanation of the meaning and purpose of life. (AT2ii)
