Reading

There will be high-interest, authentic literature providing opportunities for cross-
textual reading in the content areas. Higher order thinking skills and writing tasks
will be practiced which will prepare the students for in class as well as state tests.
Spelling- (Scott Foresman)
There will be:
- Daily Spelling Practice
- Weekly Tests (Thursday)
- Take-Home Word Lists
- Practice workbook pages, 3x each, definitions and sentences
English- (Scott Foresman)
Sentence Structure, Subjects and Predicates, Statements and Questions,
Commands and Exclamations, Compound Sentences, Nouns, Action and Linking
Verbs, Present, Past and Future Tenses, Pronouns, Contractions, Prepositions,
Adjectives and Articles, Adverbs, Conjunctions, Capitols, Letters, Abbreviations,
Combining Sentences, Commas, and Quotations.

-Please encourage neatness to children for every homework assignment to be
handed in.
-Messy work will not be accepted.
-Grading will be based on bothSpelling Tests and Handwriting workbook
*Improper penmanship can result in a deduction of a grade in any subject.
Book Reports
-Two formal book reports will be completedwithin the class. The books will be chosen by the teacher and discussed thoroughly in the classroom.
-Reading will be assigned on a daily basis. Students are responsible to complete assigned reading, as it is correlated with the weekly discussion and writing activity. These writing activities will form the book report at the end of every six to eight weeks.
-Optional book reports are encouraged throughout the year. A student may choose
a teacher approved book, and read at his/her leisure. Forms will be available in the
classroom when the child has finished his/her book. After completing the form, the teacher will grade the book report and the child will earn “stars”:
150-200 pages = 2 stars
200-300 pages = 3 stars
300-400 pages = 4 stars
The “stars” will add up to special rewards:
25stars = lunch at IN N OUT with the teacher
50 stars = a movie with the teacher
75 stars = a place of choice of the student within the Los Angeles vicinity
*Please encourage daily 30 minute reading at home. Reading will greatly
enhance your child’s comprehension, writing, and spelling skills.
Grading
When calculating grades the breakdown is as follows:
- Test 40%
- Quiz 20%
-Class work15%
-Homework 15%
-Participation and Effort 10%
Homework
-Expect students to have homework every evening, INCLUDING FRIDAYS!
**PLEASE NOTE: All homework assignments are explained thoroughly. Therefore,
students should have no difficulty in completing the tasks given.
-Be assured that concepts that have not been taught WILL NOT be given as homework.
**Every student is expected to complete and hand-in all homework assignments.
-Daily 30 minute reading is also encouraged for it heightens their reading
and writing skills
Projects
Various projects will be assigned during the course of the year.
School Time Schedule
-All students MUST be in school NO LATER THAN 8:00a.m.
-Any student entering the premises after 8:05a.m. is considered late and must go to Mrs.
Brenda’s office to obtain a late slip.
-Children arriving late to class will not be permitted to enter without a tardy slip.
*Classroom doors will open at 7:50a.m.
-Dismissal is at 3:20p.m.
*If your child is being tutored within the classroom, please pick them up no later than 3:45 p.m.
School Supplies
Please make sure that your child has the necessary school supplies needed for school
Dress Code
All students must be in uniform daily. (Neatness and cleanliness is always expected).
*Students dressed inappropriately will be sent to the office.
Report Cards
Report cards are distributed three times a year.
*Students receiving a “C'” or “D” in any subject will be given a Progress Report three weeks before report cards are due.
A Parent-Teacher Conference will also be scheduled.
Discipline
Good manners and respect for self and others is expected from every student.
*Inappropriate language and gestures are absolutely prohibited.
PLEASE NOTE: If inappropriate behavior is constant, the student, along with his/her parent, shall meet with the discipline committee.
Please refer to the Elementary Contract for detailed information.
Field Trips
One field trip will be take place during the year. Further information will be sent home at a
later date.
A Reminder
Remember to reward your child's strengths and provide help and encouragement with
their weaknesses. Building children's self esteem MUST BE OUR PRIORITY.
Therefore, let us keep the lines of communication open in order to achieve the progress
and productivity needed for a great learning experience and wonderful school year!
