Meeting was called to order at 1832
Dan Keough welcomed everyone and thanked Kevin Long and IMMC for hosting the meeting.
Meeting Minutes Minutes from the May meeting were approved as written on a motion by Frank Prowant, 2nd by Scott Gavin.
Agenda – no additions or corrections
Treasurer's Report Checking $1540.92 Savings $3511.57
Will move $1000 from checking account to savings account
Guests/Presentation Easy IO presentation by representatives from Vidacare. Jeannie was representing the manufacturer and Jackie represented the distributor.
Committee Reports
Education Committee – Frank Prowant
Meeting monthly. This group is interested in facilitating a process to create core programs to meet the greatest need, including ACLS, PEPP renewal, PHTLS and offering an NAEMT refresher 2x/ year.
Met July 20th – some topic of discussion were:
– Some concern over not enough training options for the non-traditional student
– Looking at other program providers who are offering evening and daytime classes
– Mary Greeley is offering an EMT-B remote class. Clive just wrapped one up. The Regional Training Academy is going to start one Aug. 13th. They have taught several through Mary Greeley are happy with the program.
– Question – is there an RN to PS bridge course? Indian Hills offers one
– Suggestions for training purchases – will be available for check out from Polk County EMA
o 2 adult intubation heads
o 1 pediatric intubation head
o Simulation mannequin – Dan K. said there is one at Mercy that services can use instead of this organization purchasing one. Check out through Dan K.
o Purchased ACLS, PHTLS, PEPP Textbooks – check out at Polk County EMA
– Looking into a NREMT refresher program

Medical Director Committee – John Woutat
Met with a group of medical directors. Some of the topics of discussion were:
Protocols – using WDM protocols as a base
RSI & airway
What constitutes an intubation
Next meeting is Wed. at 10 am at WDM station 19
Operations Committee – Dan Keough - tabled
Communication Center Reports – Dan Gubbins
Contacted all of the dispatch centers and invited them to the meetings
Dan Keough asked everyone to let him know if there was any feed back this group wanted to have from the centers

Conference is the 2nd weekend in November

Metro Trauma Committee – Dan Keough/Dan Gubbins
Out of 24 traumas brought into IHS, only 11 left completed run reports.
Will be compiling a list of fax numbers for all of the trauma coordinators at the hospitals.
Please encourage all medics to leave a copy of their run report at the hospital.
EMS Trauma Alerts
· services should advise the hospital of the patient injuries and ETA – not call a trauma alert.
· Kirk Schmitt said the OOH trauma protocol is being revised. They are working to define trauma alerts throughout the State.
· Frank Prowant said some protocols would have to be changed. Suggested you talk to a PA or RN when calling in your report.
Requesting Trauma Alerts
· Want formal notification to services from Metro Trauma Committee stating how they want us to handle trauma alerts.
Metro ED – Dan Keough
Trying to standardize which types of patients go to which hospital. Need formal letter laying out criteria.
MCI Committee – Steve Noland
Haven’t met since October.
Steve Warren suggested the ambulance strike teams need to be revisited
IDPH – Kirk Schmitt
EMS Advisory Council met and discussed
- Scope of practice The King LTA Airway will be added to be used any time an OPA would be used
2007 protocols were approved. HTN protocol was removed
Appendix M concerning special needs patients – added that this protocol does not pertain to inter-facility transfers
- QUASP subcommittee met
- Chapter 132 concerning air medical transport was reviewed
- System standards committee met. A draft is available for public comment.
There will be a presentation of the King LT on Aug. 9th at Mercy College of Health Sciences,
Crocker Campus. Time will be 9 or 9:30 am.
MMRS – Steve Noland
General payment of the 2006 federal grant money is completed
Polk County Health Dept. will administer this grant this year
Still have $130,000 to spend from 2006 grant money. Have until March 08 to use.
NDMS – Tom Patava
Held an exercise at the airport. Had 2 wave of 35 patients. Incorporated the ICS in this exercise.
Polk County Emergency Management: Steve Noland
Polk County will be receiving $10,000 in system development grant money. Let Steve know if you have ideas for use of this money. Have from July 1, 2007 – June 30, 2008 to use.
Frank Prowant asked what the guidelines were for the use of this money. Steve said initial training.
Asked for $29 million in Homeland Security money – will be receiving $7 million.

New Business
Dan Keough – he has added a bulletin board in the new entrance to Mercy Hospital ER. This is for services to place notices of upcoming events or new hiring opportunities, etc.
Still working through problems with the new entrance.

Announcements
· Kirk Schmitt – South Central regional EMS meeting is Wednesday in Indianola
· August 2nd – open house from 1 – 3 at DSM fire station 1 to honor David Keenan on his retirement. Discussion of gift ideas for recognition. Dan Keough will purchase a plaque.
CIEMSD will present him with a plaque at 2:30.
· Steve Warren – presented Ryan Young to the group. He is the new EMS Captain for Altoona FD.
· Frank Prowant – they are down to 2 candidates for the fire chief position in Ankeny
· Matt Klein – Windsor Heights has started the hiring process for a new fire chief
