Grants

Sponsor: American Heart Association Career Development Award

Title: The role of mitochondrial transfer and mesenchymal stem cell transplantation in neuronal preservation after cardiac arrest

Principle Investigator: Ormond

Total Project Period: 7/1/2018-6/30/2021

Amount of total support: $231,000

Specific Aims: Aim 1: Study the role of mitochondrial transfer to neurons from MSC after

ischemia, and investigate the metabolic benefit to neurons of MSC transplant in vitro after

ischemia, and the role that mitochondrial transfer plays in neuronal preservation. Aim 2: Study the role Miro1 and TNFAIP2 play in intercellular mitochondrial transfer from MSC to neurons. Additionally, we will study the role of other genes involved in mitochondrial motility and the inflammatory cascade to better understand the role of the neuron in signaling and directing the process of mitochondrial transfer. Aim 3: Study the potential benefit and mechanism of action of mitochondrial transfer to neurons from MSC in animal models of global cerebral ischemia.

Sponsor: National Cancer Institute

Title: Mechanisms underlying pro-metastatic effects of estrogen in the brain niche

Principle Investigator: Cittelly

Role: Collaborator (5% effort)

Total Project Period: 4/1/2018-3/31/2023

Amount of total support: $1,778,530

Specific aims: Aim 1: Determine how E2 upregulates BDNF in the metastatic niche, and whether

BDNF activation of TRKB/EGFR/HER2 is a mechanism of increased brain metastases in response to E2. Aim 2: Determine how E2 regulates microglia activation and polarization at early stages of brain

metastases, and whether this is a mechanism of increased brain metastases in response to E2. Aim 3: Determine whether targeting E2/ER signaling or downstream BDNF/TRKB/EGFR activation reduces brain

metastatic colonization and progression in vivo. This

Sponsor: Medtronic
