Summer Fun at the Museum
Those looking for the perfect place to cool off this summer and a fun, educational activity for the kiddos, look no further than the Lake Havasu Museum of History.
This summer, the museum is again hosting an educational exhibit with a variety of fun activities for children. Some of the same activities which have been enjoyed in past summers --- life-sized floor checkers, Havasuopoly, activity sheets, pet rock adoptions and the magnetic black sand are still available.
One of last year’s popular displays -- the “Eyeclops” -- will again be available. This magnifier allows a close-up look at crystals and rocks. This year, the museum will add some new activities which encourage exploration of our natural world -- animals, plants and living things in our desert.
There’s a storybook display, called “Cactus Hotel,” with a model saguaro which shows how many creatures live in and around the saguaro. We’re having a touch and feel box where younger kids can guess what is inside. There are puzzles which teach about desert animals and their habitat.
Each year the museum adds some new activities, so all the interactive exhibits will captivate kids of all ages. Most are easily enjoyed with adult help; however, some extra supervision may be required, depending on the age of the child. Kids can also create their own version of the London Bridge with blocks and learn a bit about how engineering is used when building.
The exhibits are set up clockwise around central space in the museum: kid’s creativity table (with a couple take-along items), black sand, viewing crystals under the microscope, tic-tac-toe, reading corner, Arizona rocks, volcanoes, fossils and artifact “dig,” natural history display and pet rock adoption center. Each area has posters and signs with directions/information. The popular “Pet Rock Adoption Center” provides a choice of river rock, adoption registration, and an opportunity to name, weigh and measure the chosen “adoptee.”
There are exhibits requiring adult supervision within the center area. An adult should be accompanying the children. If the child is under 3, please watch for small objects which might be put in the mouth.
As each child leaves, they can select a gift-wrapped rock from the basket behind the docent desk. If they are curious about what the rock is, the display on the pedestal identifies the various rocks. There are also several items for sale in our museum store which accompany the summer exhibit.
The fun begins June 1. The museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Adults are $7.50 for non-members. Members and children under 12 are admitted free. This exhibit will be available through August. The museum is located at 320 London Bridge Road. Reach them at 928-854-4938.
