I, ______have been instructed in the lab safety and emergency techniques needed for my science class. I have made a grade of 100% on the lab safety exam, which allows me to participate in lab activities. I understand and agree to follow the lab safety regulations set forth above and in the lab safety guide I received from my teacher. I am aware that my safety and the safety of my classmates depend on my behavior in the laboratory. With this in mind, I will closely follow the oral and written instructions provided by my teacher, lab manual, or the school administration.

Dear Parent:

The use of contact lenses in some laboratory environments can pose a danger to the eye and/or lens. Some chemical companies and universities forbid the use of contact lenses even when protected by safety goggles. Listed below are some facts to be considered concerning contact lens use in the laboratory environment.

  1. Should an accident occur which involves splashing chemicals into the eye, the lens may
hold the chemical on the eye.
  2. In such an accident as described above, the time it takes to remove the lens is added to the time before washing and /or medication can be administered.
  3. Soft contact lenses may increase the risk because they may pick up chemicals that enter the air as fumes. In such cases damage may occur to the eye, as well as the lenses.

In spite of the above facts, there are teachers and professors who have continued to wear contact lenses in the laboratory and have not experienced any difficulty. We realize that some students may not have glasses to wear instead of lenses. The decision to wear or not to wear contact lenses in the laboratory should, therefore, be the student’s and the parent’s. Of course, all students must wear safety goggles in certain laboratories, even if they wear contact lenses or prescription glasses.
