Elections at the Annual Meetings of IABSE

The Annual Meetings of IABSE were held September 20-22, 2015, in Geneva, Switzerland. Aseveryodd-numbered year elections were held and the Permanent Committee elected the next President and four new Vice Presidents and of IABSE:

Fernando Branco, Portugal, was elected to be the next President of IABSE. He will succeed the currentPresident David A. Nethercot from Nov. 1, 2016 to Oct. 31, 2019. Fernando Branco is professor and former President of the Civil Engineering Dept., IST –Lisbon University. He left recently the Presidency of the European Council of Civil Engineers and he is currently Partner of GATEWIT, Construction Information Technologies, and of SACIV, Ld., Civil Engineering Services. He has co-authored 14 books, 8 patents and over 300 scientific papers and 800 technical reports. He has been consultant for major Public Works in Portugal like the S. João Bridge (world longest railway span in cantilever construction), International Guadiana Bridge, Macau-Taipa Bridge (in China) and Vasco da Gama Bridge (the longest in Europe). His fields of expertise are bridge design, maintenance and rehabilitation, and new materials (composites).

Fernando Branco joined IABSE in 1988. He isVice President of IABSE,member of the Administrative Committee, Chair of the IABSE Portuguese Group, and Delegate of the Permanent Committee. He is a former member and Chair of Working Commission 8 ‘Operation, Maintenance, Repair of Structures’, former Chair of the Technical Committee (2005-2009) and was a member of the recent Task Group for IABSE’s New Strategy (2011-2013).

The following Vice Presidents were elected for the period of Nov. 1, 2015 to Oct. 31, 2019:

H. H. Snijder, The Netherlands,holds a MSc in Civil Engineering of Delft University of Technology, and a first year law degree from Leiden University, the Netherlands. In 1993 he was appointed full professor of Structural Design at the Department of the Built Environment of Eindhoven University of Technology, The Netherlands, first part-time and since 1999 full-time until today.Prior to joining Eindhoven University of Technology as a professor, he worked first as Scientific Assistant at the Laboratory for Structures and Fatigue in 1983 and from 1985 at TNO Delft. He joined the Dutch National Railways (NS) in 1989 specialised in consulting engineering for structural design and was a project engineer at the consulting firm of NS until 1999. He has from 2000 subsequently held the positions at the Department of the Built Environment of Eindhoven University of Technology, as Chair of the Structural Design and Construction Technology Group; Vice-Dean and Member of the Board, and is at present the Chair of the Structural Design Group. His research interests concern strength, stability, connections, fatigue and fracture of steel structures; glass structures, and development of design rules.

H. H. Snijder joined IABSE in 1995. He is currently a member of the Bulletin Editorial Board (former SED Editorial Board), and a Delegate of the Permanent Committee. He is a formermember and Chair of the Editorial Board of IABSE’s journal Structural Engineering International(SEI) and former member of the Working Commission 2 ‘Steel, Timber and Composite Structures’. He served as a member of the Scientific Committees of the Congress Lucerne 2000, Symposium Weimar 2007, Congress Seoul 2012 and Conference Rotterdam 2013.

Harshavardhan Subbarao, India, graduated in 1985 in Civil Engineering at Bangalore University India. In the following year he was a Research Scholar (Structures), at The Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, and obtained a M.S.E (Civil & Structural Eng.) in 1988 at the University of Michigan, USA. Whilst pursuing his Ph.D. from 1986-1995 at Imperial College, London, UK, he was involved in developing Construma Consultancy Pvt. Ltd. into a leading civil and structural engineering consultancy. In 1992 he was appointed Director of the same company, and is its Chairman and Managing Director since 2008. Harshavardhan Subbarao’s field of expertise lies with Bridge-, Structural and Highway Engineering, Design, Repairs, Rehabilitation, Project Management and Business Development. He has 34 years of Professional Experience in Designing of bridges and roads, Construction Management, Planning, Quality assurance and cost control of various highway and bridge projects in India. His involvement with IRC has helped in upgrading and revision of various IRC Codes. He has been involved in more than 250 bridges, including Long Span, Cable Stayed, Segmental, Arch etc.

Harshavadran Subbarao joined IABSE in 1984. He is on the Executive Committee of Indian Group of IABSE andis its former Chair(2014). He is a member of the Technical Committee, and will be the next Chair of the Bulletin Editorial Board, and member of the Working Group 8 on ‘Forensic Engineering’. He is a former member of Working Commission 4 ‘Conservation of Structures’, and the Outstanding Paper Award Committee, and has been active on various Scientific Committees, most recently those of IABSE Kolkata 2013, Madrid 2014, Geneva 2015 and currently Guangzhou 2016.

Tina Vejrum, Denmark, has specialised in structural design of steel structures and has worked with design of bridges throughout her professional career. She obtained her Ph.D. in 1997 and as part of her research, she spent a semester at EPF Lausanne, Switzerland.Tina Vejrum joined COWI A/S – a major Danish consulting firm – in 1996 working within design and supervision of large, international bridge projects. She has worked on a number of landmark structures, including Great Belt East Bridge (Denmark), rehabilitation of Lions' Gate (Canada), Stonecutters Bridge (Hong Kong) detailed design and three years on site, 3rd Tagus River Crossing (Portugal), Chacao Bridge (Chile) and Puente Nigale across Lake Maracaibo (Venezuela) both currently under construction, and recently studies for floating bridges across Bjørnafjorden (Norway). Starting out as a bridge engineer, she gradually moved into project management and today acts as Vice President for COWI's department of Major Bridges International.

Tina Vejrum joined IABSE as a member in 1997. Her activities include: member of Working Commission 2 (2011-2015); member of Task Group responsible for IABSE's New Strategy
(2011-2013); member of the Editorial Board for Structural Engineering International (SEI) since 2014; and secretary of the Danish Group of IABSE since 2015. In addition she has served as a member of the Scientific Committees for Madrid 2014 and Guangzhou 2016. Furthermore, she was a member of the Lead Team responsible for organising the Geneva 2015 Symposium implementing important elements of the New Strategy.

Thomas Vogel, Switzerland, joined ETH Zurich, Switzerland at the Institute of Structural Engineering in October 1992 as associate professor. In 1995, he was appointed full professor and led the institute as head during several biennial periods. Prior to joining ETH, he was project engineer and later engineering manager at two consulting firms. His research is concentrated on structures of reinforced and prestressed concrete, CFRP and glass with respect to new and existing structures, examination of dismantled structures, non-destructive testing and monitoring, provisions to increase robustness, structures subject to rockfall, and fatigue. His teaching activities cover structural analysis, concrete structures, bridge design, conceptual design, existing structures as well as the supervision of respective bachelor and master theses and project works. Since 2008, he serves as Vice-Rector for Doctoral Studies of ETH Zurich as a secondary appointment.

Thomas Vogel joined IABSE as a member in 1984. He was engaged in Working Commission 1 ‘Structural Performance, Safety and Analysis’ since 1993, at first as a member until he finally chaired it from2001-2005. He was a member of the Administrative Committee from 2005 to 2013.He served as member of the Scientific Committees of the Colloquium Berlin 1998, the Congress Lucerne 2000, the Symposium Budapest 2006 and the Workshop Helsinki 2013 as well as Vice-chair of the Organising Committee of the Congress Lucerne 2000.

The International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering (IABSE) founded in 1929, operates on a worldwide basis and deals with all aspects of planning, design, construction, maintenance and repair of civil engineering structures. The mission of IABSE is to exchange knowledge and to advance the practice of structural engineering worldwide in the service of the profession and society. To fulfil its mission, IABSE organises conferences and publishes a high quality journal, Structural Engineering International (SEI); publishes books reflecting the work of its Technical Groups; creates Working Groups, as required by new needs and technological progress; offers activities within National Groups of IABSE; supports Young Engineers with a programme, and presents annual Awards in recognition.
