Hante New Zealand Equipment List

Remember that the season in New Zealand during this particular Hante Adventure will be winter. We will be visiting the country in the middle of their coldest part of the season. During the Hante Adventure participants should expect temperatures of 50˚ during the daytime hours, and 30’s at night. We will be staying in huts, hostels, and hotels so no tents will be taken on this trip. It is important that all of the listed equipment be packed in order to provide the participant with the most comfortable experience.

Clothing

4 Pair of Wool Socks: to be worn over the sock liners

1 Pair Sock Liners: smooth, thin synthetic material that reduces the risk of blisters and hot spots and helps the outer sock last longer before needing changing.

1 pair Long Underwear (mid-weight both top and bottom): These items should fit comfortably under your other layers of clothing and not minimize your movement.

Fleece or another insulating type pant: Pants other than jeans.

Winter Jacket: Mid to Heavy weight. (down or synthetic)

Rain Jacket and Pants (Gore-tex preferable): For the jacket a full front zipper is recommended. The jacket should not be tight and should have pit-zips for ventilation. Pants can be ski/snowboard pants/bibs.

Gloves: One Pair of Winter gloves: Ski or Snowboard Style would be okay.

Hats: One warm winter hat, baseball cap to keep sun off of face.

Sunglasses: Polarized and should be the "wrap" around type.

6 pair Underwear

4 Short Sleeve T-Shirts (at least two polypro)

2 Long Sleeve T-Shirts (polypro preferable)

2 pair of hiking pants: Can be polyester, nylon, or some other synthetic material.

Footwear

Hiking boots: Light to mid-weight varieties are the best. The boots should cover your ankles. Besure to break them in before departing on your trip. This will help you avoid getting irritating blisters. Vasque, Merrell, and Asolo make quality boots.

1 Comfortable pair of shoes: Great for traveling in, wearing around campsites, playing Ultimate, etc.

Personal Items

Sunscreen: SPF 30 or better.

Lip Balm with sunscreen

Headlamp: high quality with 2 sets of batteries

Toiletries: toilet paper, toothpaste, toothbrush, shampoo, keep it simple

Please bring any wrist, ankle or knee braces for any past injuries you have had.

Glasses, contacts, retainers, and medications you regularly take, etc.

Personal First Aid Kit: tape, band aids, mole skin, etc.

2 Trash Compactor Bags: To line stuff sacks and pack to keep things dry

Camera (OPTIONAL)

Book (OPTIONAL)

Gear

Sleeping Bag (rated 5°-15°) w/ compression stuff sack: Synthetic is preferred over down because if down gets wet, it loses its warmth. It definitely rains a lot in NZ as well, just a reminder

Plastic Cup, Bowl, Spoon

Water system: 1-32oz Nalgene or similar and a camel back or hydration system for ease of water consumption

Daypack: Small pack for city treks and easy day hikes. This will be used as a carry-on for the flight

Backpack: Internal frame pack with a MINIMUM 4800 cubic inches. Keep it light and simple and avoid unnecessary flashy zippers and attachments. Rather than purchasing a pack before the trip, please accept the invitation to use a pack from here at Hante Adventures (we can ship it to you, and you ship it back)

Gaiters are OPTIONAL but extremely helpful: Be sure the gaiters that you have are going to fit around your boots properly. Outdoor Research Crocodile gaiters are a style that would work well. Gaiters are very useful in keeping snow and debris out of your boots and socks.

Hiking poles (OPTIONAL)

We hope that you have many of the items on hand or can borrow them from friends. If you do need to purchase gear you can find many of the items on this list in surplus stores, thrift shops, local sporting good stores, outdoor stores and in mail order catalogs. Below are a few reputable companies:
