Danvers Public Elementary Schools Light Up Blue
For World Autism Day on April 2 – Join Us!
The Special Education Parent Advisory Committee (SEPAC) is a group of parents from Danvers who are dedicated to the support of parents of children with special needs. There are kids behind desks in every school in Danvers who learn differently; in fact, 17% of students in Danvers receive some kind of special education services. SEPAC wanted to take a day to celebrate kids that learn differently and honor their experiences, as well as that of their parents, siblings, and friends.
That is why, building on an annual event at Great Oak School, we will be celebrating World Autism Day in our elementary schools on April 2. World Autism Awareness Day was adopted by the United Nations in 2007. On World Autism Awareness Day, Autism Speaks (who spoke at SEPAC this year) celebrates its international “Light It Up Blue” campaign. Thousands of iconic landmarks, communities, businesses, and homes across the globe unite by shining bright blue lights in honor of the millions of individuals and families around the world affected by autism.
On World Autism Day, the Danvers Public Elementary Schools will join buildings such as the Empire State Building, Leaning Tower of Pisa, the Sydney Opera House, and the International Space Station in lighting up blue – not just for children with autism but for every child in our district who learns differently. We encourage students to wear blue on April 2. There will be volunteers at school drop-off at each elementary school handing out blue light bulbs to anyone who might want to take one and join the district by lighting up their home blue.
We appreciate your input and support, and hope to see you at SEPAC meetings this year. We have two meetings left: April 1, when Dr. David Stember will present on “What to Ask for in an IEP,” and May 6, when the BSEA Director & Hearing Officer, Reece Erlichman, will discuss conflict resolution.
