1. INTRODUCTION
1.1. WELCOME MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR
I am writing this introduction at a time of considerable for Green Hill Institute. We have only been in existence for a few years, but we have made considerable progress in this short time.
From opening the institute with 7 students in 1999 with single program and have grown to a current enrollment of 120 for the 2010/2011 Academic year, 80 in certificate programs and 40 to non certificate programs.
Further we have integrated the institute from a single program to four schools, which are School of Journalism and Broadcasting, School of Hotel Operation Management, School of Travel and Tourism Studies and the School of Business Studies.
As you will see from this publication we conduct several training programs, Certificates and non certificates programs. Also we provide business consultancy in Hospitality Industry and other related industries.
Due to many changes and challenges taking place both nationally and internationally, Green Hill Institute considered it of outmost importance to chart its future direction and develop strategies that will allow the institute to play the most effective national and academic role.
We therefore carried out a comprehensive strategic planning exercise and have produced ambitious Rolling strategic plan to guide us through the next five years. We recognize that we now have a responsibility to work even harder to implement our plans and to continue to strength the institute and build capacity.

1.2. Location
The GHI is located at Forest Area, Kambarage Road, Kadege Building near Mbeya Open University, Mbeya City. Also, GHI has easy access to several major tourist attractions including, Kitulo National Park, Mbozi meteorite, Matema Beach, Mbeya Peak, mount Rungwe, Ngosi crater, Songwe Hot Springs and easy way to Katavi National Park. Other cultural sites around GHI are Safwa Caves and Merere Fort at Utengule Village.
1.3. Background information and vision.
1.3.1. Establishment and mandate:
Green Hill Institute was established as a VET provider in accordance with VET Act NO. 1 of 1994 and was registered in 2002 under Section 6.2 (f) of part III of the VET Act 1 1994. On 03th January 2002 the establishment Act mandated GHI to provide training on Hotel Management and Tourism.
GHI was established in 1999 in Mbeya City by Mr. L. L. Mpagike, who had been serving in Hotels in different senior positions and widely travelled in many African countries. The institute was primarily established as a training institute on Hotel Management, catering, travel and Tourism studies. It aimed to provide education vocationally meeting the National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) and received its approval by VETA in 2002.
Further, the institute developed schools in the area of training as following: school of Journalism and broadcasting, school of business studies, school of catering and Hotel management, School of travel and Tourism.
The aim and vision of GHI’s founder was to promote Hotel Business, tourism Industry, environmental conservation management and community development in Tanzania. Also the products of GHI aimed to be well trained with highest ethical standards and entrepreneurial skills in the related industries.
1.4. Accreditation status
The Green Hill Institute is an accredited training institute recognized by United Republic of Tanzania through VETA. It was among the first training institutes in hospitality industry in the Southern Highlands of Tanzania, also it is affiliated with Cambridge International College.

The GHI is headed by the Director ( who is the secretary the board of governors) assisted by the resident director, the Principal, Vice Principal, Dean of Students, Departmental heads and heads of schools.
