AP Studio 3-D Design – Ceramics Summer 2016
The 3-D Design – Ceramics will provide you with a college level course and will allow you to develop a body of work to reflect a higher level of thought and technique. The portfolio is composed of three sections: quality, breadth, and concentration. Summer assignments are developed to help you prepare for all the work you will create next year.
1. Review the requirements of the 3-D Design- Ceramics portfolio on apcentral.collegeboard.com/
2. You are required to complete the Sketchbook or Altered Book project. This will help you develop concepts for your concentration.
3. Research 3 ceramic artists/sculptures online or by visiting an art museum, gallery or personal artist’s studio. Use the Inspiring Artist format.
4. Collect an assortment of Trash for mixed-media: anything and everything.
Choose Two:
5. Design a sculpture that illustrates the idea of a circle within a square. You may use any material you wish. Think about the affect of light and shadow on the form. This will be a maquette or model for a clay sculpture.
6. Construct a cubist still life from cardboard. Add color, but not realistic ones. Look at historical cubist works for reference. This will be a maquette or model for a clay sculpture.
7. Create a figurative form in plaster or play doh. Think in terms of positive and negative space and balance. Let the form be about the shape around the figure and the shapes created by shadows cast from the figure. Look at the work of Henry Moore. This will be a maquette or model for a clay sculpture.
8. Create a figure from a soft modeling media like Sculpey*.(Sculpey is oven baked clay. Easy to bake on an aluminum pan/foil. Available at HobbyLobby – use a 40% off coupon. You may need to use an armature (foil and wire). This will be a maquette for a clay sculpture. This is a stiff material but will become more pliable as it warms and bends in your hands. Research Philipe Faraut and Adam Beane.
