OCTOBER
Fall is here, and we’ve had our first snow for the season. October is known as National Popcorn Popping Month, Clergy Appreciation Month and Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
Some memorable holidays include Name Your Car Day on the 2nd; Take Your Teddy Bear to Work Day on the 11th; Boss’ Day on the 16th; and Halloween on Friday the 31st.
There are two birthstones for October; the Tourmaline and the Opal. The flower of the month is the Calendula.
DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH
As mention above, October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Victims of domestic violence can be any age, sex, race, culture, religion, education, employment or marital status.
Children witnessing domestic violence and living in an environment where violence occurs may experience some of the same trauma as abused children. Not all children are affected by domestic violence in the same way. Children may become fearful, inhibited, aggressive, antisocial, withdrawn, anxious, depressed, angry, confused; suffer from disturbed sleep, problems with eating, difficulties at school and challenges in making friends. Children often feel caught in the middle between their parents and find it difficult to talk to either of them. Adolescents may act out or exhibit risk-taking behaviors such as drug and alcohol use, running away, sexual promiscuity and criminal behavior. Young men may try to protect their mothers, or they may become abusive to their mothers themselves. Children may be injured if they try to intervene in the violence in their homes.
If you or someone you know is a victim of domestic violence, don’t hesitate. Call for help. Domestic violence is not a one-time event, and it will escalate. Your local police, women’s shelter, and many on-line sites have resources for getting help.
FCGH HAPPENINGS
The boys had a wonderful fishing trip again in September, this time up the loop road. It was a beautiful day.
GRANT AWARD
Fremont County Group Homes is pleased to announce that our DHHS grant has been renewed for the 2014-2015 fiscal year. This grant, which we have had for over 35 years, provides runaway and homeless youth prevention services individually and within the local schools, provides shelter if needed, and arranges for individual and family counseling to help reunite families and prevent out-of-home placement. Our services are for non-system (those not currently receiving services from any other agency), youth and families. The program deals with youth 11-17 years of age who have run away or are homeless, who are contemplating running away, or are at high risk for running away or becoming homeless. These services are provided in both our Riverton and Lander homes. In addition the Fremont County Group Homes sub-contracts with four other Group Homes in the state to provide runaway and homeless youth services. These facilities are located in Evanston, Laramie, Gillette and Sheridan.
Please contact Jeff Verosky at 307-856-2643 for more information or a request for services.

Happy Halloween
Halloween was confusing. All my life my parents said, “Never take candy from strangers.” And then they dressed me up and said, “Go beg for it.” I didn’t know what to do. I’d knock on the doors and go, “Trick or Treat . . . no thank you.” ~ Rita Rudner
And remember, if it rains or snows on Halloween, don’t let it dampen your spirits!
We are grateful for your caring and generosity!!
