Technology and Online Computer Access Requirements: /
Students must use word processing software for all assignments (ex: Microsoft Word) and occasionally use the internet to complete assignments. Students must also use LakerMail in all SLS1501 communications. Computers and Internet are available throughout the campus computer labs and library if no access is available at home. Power Point will be used for Career Portfolio Project.

  1. To help students become part of a community of active learners by establishing critical connections to LSCC, the instructor, advisors, classmates, and other support resources
  2. To empower students to accept personal responsibility for their choices and actions, and the resulting consequences
  3. To guide students through self-exploration of their unique learning styles, strengths and callenges that impact college success: “learning how to learn”
  4. To assist students in developing academic and life skills that are essential for success in college and beyond
  5. To facilitate students’ development of a personal portfolio, to include: results and reflections of self-exploration assessments; an articulated potential career goal; an academic plan to progress towards goals; a professional resume; completed assignments; and a personal plan for balancing and managing life and school demands
  6. To introduce students to classroom presenting and to practive public speaking

Academic Integrity: / The successful functioning of the academic community demands honesty, which is the basis of respect for both ideas and persons. In the academic community, there is an ongoing assumption of academic integrity at all levels. There is the expectation that work will be independently thoughtful and responsible as to its sources of information and inspiration. Honesty is an appropriate consideration in other ways as well, including but not limited to the responsible use of library resources, responsible conduct in examinations, and the responsible use of the Internet. In order for your information to be released, a form must be signed and in your records located in the Admissions/Registrar’s Office.
Attendance / Withdrawal Policies: / This course is designed to help you develop skills for success. You presence and participation are nevessary for success; therefore, you must be present, on time, an actively participating for the entire class session. Two late arrivals or early departures equal one absence. Your grade is affected if you miss more than ONE class.
Please note that if you are unable to attend class, are arriving late, or prompted to leave early due to emergencies or unavoidable problems, you must notify me and contact a responsible classmate to find out what preparation is required for the next class. /

If for any reason you decide to discontinue class attendance, it is YOUR responsibility to withdraw from the course prior to the deadline and to complete the required forms at the Enrollment Services desk. Failure to withdraw properly will result in a grade of “F”, which
will remain permanently on your college transcript.

In general, there will be no make-ups allowed on missed assignments, or other graded work. If you must miss a class, it is your responsibility to find out what preparation and/or assignments are required for the next class. You will be expected to be prepared. In some exceptional cases I will accept emailed (as an attachment) homework or journal assignments if you are absent or accept late assignments with points taken off automatically. All work is to be turned in at the class session it is due.

Classroom Rules and Policies: / There are reasonable expectations for student behavior in this class, and conduct must be based upon the focus of the course, the Values of LSCC: Respect, Honesty & Integrity, Teamwork, Service, Scholarship, High Performance, and the timeless wisdom of treating others the way you want to be treated.
RESPECT is demonstrated in many ways, including, but not limited to:
  • Responsible use of cell phones/I-Phones – they are to be turned off or on silent (not vibrate) and kept out of sight during all classes and related activities. No text messaging or other such communications are allowed in a classroom. MP3 players, audio earpieces, and wireless laptops are not allowed in the classroom.
  • Attendance and active participation in all class sessions and related activities
  • Timely arrival in class by 4:30pm and not preparing to leave until class is dismissed
  • Refraining from side conversations when the instructor, classmates, or guest presenters are speaking
  • Demonstrating respect of differences in others, even if you disagree with beliefs, by refraining from the use of any derogatory comments or labels (Think before you speak)
  • Use of appropriate language in all class related activities
  • Getting to know every one of your classmates in this learning community

  • Submitting all work that is completed entirely by you, unless it is a part of an assigned group project,
