Job TitleTeaching Assistant

Reports toSEND Coordinator

Liaises withstudents, staff, SLT, parents and other outside agencies as required.

Key Responsibilities:

Working with students

• Help students who need extra support to complete tasks.

• Encourage independence and reward self-reliance.

• Encourage participation.

• Provide students with feedback in relation to progress and achievement.

• Support students with behavioural difficulties.

• Promote inclusion and acceptance.

Supporting the curriculum

• Deliver planned activities with the guidance of the teacher/SEND.

• Deliver local and national learning strategies.

• Simplify or translate teacher’s language when needed and support teachers in simplifying language when lesson planning.

• Organise curriculum resources for TA intervention work and guide teachers with theirs.

• Where appropriate use ICT to support learning activities.

Helping with resources and records

• Help to prepare classroom for lessons.

• Help to provide displays.

• Monitor the progress of individuals or groups on behaviour or learning charts.

• Observe individuals for assessment purposes under the guidance of the SEND.

Supporting the teacher

• Give feedback to the teacher following planned activities.

• Support teacher to maintain classroom rules and discipline.

• Report concerns regarding students to the teacher, Housemaster, SEND or other person as per School procedure.

• Assist the teacher in the production of activity pages, plans etc.

• Issue resources and equipment.

• Help when teacher is settling the class, late arrivals and when the teacher dismisses the class.

Supporting students with special educational needs

• Be familiar with SIMS and provision maps.

• Contribute to the development and implementation of mapping.

• Modify resources.

• Attend review meetings when requested.

• Help the student with organisation.

• Check understanding.

• Offer TA – student target when necessary liaising with the teacher.

• Liaise with Houses and SEND.

Developing Provision Map

•Be part of information gathering, attending student case conferences if necessary.

•Help to analyse information regarding a student.

•Help to inform target setting.

•Help to identify and discuss strategies.

•Be part of the monitoring and reviewing process in School.

Safeguarding

• Ensure you know what safeguarding is.

• Ensure you know what is meant by child abuse.

• Know your duty to refer. Ensure familiarity with the School’s safeguarding and child protection policy.

Other

•Maintain daily records of activity.

•Attend Staff meetings and briefings.

•Attend weekly SEND department meetings.

•Attend training days as required.

•Attend parental consultation days as required.

•Know SEND legislation and other key school documents.

Carry out reasonable requests/tasks made by and in conjunction with the Line Manager, Principal or Senior Leadership Team.

Person Specification

Essential Skills and Qualifications

  • Able to swim – Desirable
  • GCSE Mathematics and English to grade C or equivalent
  • Physically demanding – able to look after a Y11 male student

Desirable Experience/Skills

  • Cerebral Palsy and or physical difficulty
  • First Aid – completed a certified course or within first 6 months of being in post

Working Pattern

Monday, Tuesday and Thursday working 0800 till 1700 hrs with an hours break during the day unpaid.

Wednesday, Friday and Saturday

0800 till 1235 hours with exception of Sat 0820 hrs start.

Term time is approx. 33/34 weeks. We work pay as if working 35 weeks, so this takes account of training and preparation time end and start of terms. Paid for a total of 40 weeks to take account of your allowance for Annual Leave and Bank Holiday. Salary is paid equally over 12 months.

In addition you will be paid a non-pensionable DYRMS Contribution Allowance of £5,211 per annum to your basic salary while undertaking pastoral and extra curricular duties and this involves responsibilities which include:

  • A position as Tutor in a Boarding House – 1 evening a week
  • supervision of students at whole school gatherings
  • a full contribution to the sports, clubs and activities programmes – offering the equivalent of five sessions per week where one session approximates to one double period, a weekend session counts as double.
  • a willingness to contribute to the life of the school throughout the term, including Saturdays and Sundays. Maximum of 12 duties over a year.
