A JOINT RESOLUTION honoring Leslie County native and former soldier Stanley Wilson by designating United States Highway 421 in Leslie County, from its intersection with Kentucky Route 2058 continuing one mile north as the "Stanley Wilson Memorial Highway."

WHEREAS, Stanley Wilson was born February 19, 1928, in the Big Branch community of Leslie County; and

WHEREAS, at the young age of 15 Stanley Wilson enlisted in the military and honorably fought for his country during World War II with the 15th Infantry Regiment 1st Battalion Company A; and

WHEREAS, Stanley Wilson was wounded multiple times during the Battle of Anzio in Italy, a campaign that was successful in holding German forces in Italy and preventing their redeployment; and

WHEREAS, it was during this campaign that Stanley Wilson received the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, American Defense Service Medal, and the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal; and

WHEREAS, after returning from his military duties, Stanley Wilson met and married, Oma, his wife of 57 years. They returned to Leslie County in 1963 and opened a general store which faithfully served the community of Helton for decades; and

WHEREAS, Stanley Wilson was a former ordained minister of Beach Fork United Methodist Church of Helton, and the Cutshin Bible Church in Yeaddiss. He also served as a lay minister for more than 40 years; and

WHEREAS, in 2010, for his service in the military and as a minister of the gospel Stanley Wilson received the Third Infantry Division, Society of Service Award for World War II Uniformed; and

WHEREAS, Stanley Wilson traversed these earthly bounds on April 24, 2011. He is survived by his wife Oma Wilson, daughters Peggy Wilson Williams and Carla Wilson Bailey, and many other family and friends who loved him dearly;

NOW, THEREFORE,

Be it resolved by the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Kentucky:

Section 1. The Transportation Cabinet is hereby directed to designate United States Highway 421 in Leslie County, from its intersection with Kentucky Route 2058 continuing one mile north as the "Stanley Wilson Memorial Highway." The Transportation Cabinet shall within 30 days of the effective date of this Resolution, erect signs at the appropriate intervals denoting this designation.
