People currently working towards achievement of this qualification may either complete its requirements or transfer their results to the replacement qualification.

Purpose

This qualification recognises people working as snow safety officers with full responsibility for the snow safety programme in a mountain area.

People holding this qualification have demonstrated that they are competent to work in a supervisory capacity with skills to develop documentation for a snow safety programme and evaluate avalanche stability and hazards for a mountain area. This qualification is designed for people needing to make assessments of snow stability and avalanche hazard for a mountain operation, for example, in a snowsport area, mountain guiding, ski-mountaineering, roading or heliskiing operation.

The elective section allows people to select credits to either broaden their core skill base or specialise in a chosen area.

This qualification builds on the skills and knowledge gained in the National Certificate in Snowsport (Patrol) (Level 4) [Ref: 0443] and can lead to the National Certificate in Snowsport (Supervision) with strands in Lift Operation, Patrol Leader, Snowsport Equipment, Snowgrooming, Snowmaking, Snowschool, and Ticketing and Guest Services [Ref: 1219].

This qualification will be awarded to people who have met the requirements of the compulsory and elective sections.

Award of NQF Qualifications

Credit gained for a standard may be used only once to meet the requirements of this qualification.

Reviewed standards that continue to recognise the same overall outcome are registered as new versions and retain their identification number (Id). Version 2 was issued following review of the qualification.

Changes to structure and content

·  Unit standard 3492 added to the compulsory section.

·  The elective requirement decreased from 10 to 7 credits and the level requirement for elective credits has been decreased from level 5 or above to level 3 or above from specified domains.

·  The snowsport subfield has been removed from the elective.

·  The prerequisite for the National Certificate in Snowsport (Patrol Leader) (Level 5) [Ref: 0581] has been removed, and the National Certificate in Snowsport (Patrol) (Level4) [Ref: 0443] is now a prerequisite to the qualification.
