Definitions:

Course Description: WSHS Career Academy offers courses of instruction based on the “StudentASE Test Program”. There are a number of factors that influence this decision, the most important of which is ensuring that our instruction focuses on the needs of our industry partners and that our instruction meets the guidelines of the Department of Work Force Development's Blueprint for Prosperity Grant. The other factor that determines which specific StudentASE test the instruction will be based upon is, if it will potentially transfer as a Technical College Transcripted Credit. Academy staff will continue to meet with local technical college staff to attempt to make this happen for our students. The other factor that influences what StudentASE Test the Academy will focus on for each term, is the number of Academy seniors that have previously completed StudentASE Tests. Since the Academy is open to Juniors and Seniors, there will may be times when the quantity of Junior students returning might make it more meaningful for the group as a whole, to focus on a different Student ASE area. All students will be tested at the beginning of the course using the StudentASE Test, and at the end of the course to determine progress.

Student Attire - students must have safety glasses, long pants, and closed toe shoes for all evening training sessions. Students are expected to wear school appropriate attire, without offensive language, or language that is related to drugs and alcohol.

Course Length - Academy courses are designed to fit into 3 terms of approximately 4 months in length. Summer Term starts approximately the first week in July and ends in the last week of October. Term 2 starts the first week of November and ends the last week in February. Term 3 starts the first week of March and ends the last week of June. These times are approximate, and can be influenced by a number of factors (Holidays, Student achievement, and Instructor Schedules and availability). Weekly classes of approximately 3 hours in length make up the total time in class. Automotive classes will meet on Tuesday evenings, and Diesel classes will meet on Thursday evenings.

Grading Periods/Terms and Credits - Academy Grading Periods are divided into the 3 Terms or grading periods (see above). Students that complete the assigned coursework will earn .5 credit “P” for Passing. Students that withdraw before completion of the grading period will receive an “F” for the period. Students will not be allowed into program, once the term has started, unless an individual has demonstrated to the lead instructor significant capabilities, and able to start without any additional instruction.

Youth Apprentice - Those students that are employed as Youth Apprentices can receive an additional 1 credit (per school year). Those students employed as a Youth Apprentice during the summer do not receive an extra .5 credit for the summer term. Since there is a total hourly work requirement for the Youth Apprentice, the summer hours apply towards this total. Placements will be made based on in- class performance and at the discretion of the hiring service manager . The intent is to place all students in jobs, however various factors (economy, position availability, etc may prevent this).

Course Objectives:

In order to Pass the Instructional portion of the Academy, Students will:

** work with professional technicians accomplishing lab activities as required by the specific Program of Instruction
** attend at least 70% of the nightly class meetings (making up those requirements as indicated by the lead instructor).

** complete 100% of course requirements. These requirements include.

  1. Weekly homework activities.
  2. Demonstrate mastery of the tasks identified in the “StudentASE task list” for the given content area for each grading period topic per term.
  3. Demonstrate a “significant increase” in the score of their end of term StudentASE test over their pre-instruction ASE test.
