·  January 14, 2000 – A framed picture of the Harstine I ferry was presented.

·  February 11, 2000 – Women’s Club purchased a slightly used propane stove for the kitchen for $900.

·  March 10, 2000 – The handicapped bathroom has been completed. Women’s Club requested permission to have large cabinet built between the refrigerator and doorway into main hall for which they will pay – dedicated to Damon LaJune.

·  June 9, 2000 – Farmer’s Market first held(?).

·  August 14, 2000 - Bob and Myrtle Parker donated a flagpole to the Community Hall. Frank Lewis offered to donate a large wool flag that has been flown over the U.S. Capitol Building. Jim Anderson found a cannon in the attic a few years ago, has refurbished it and suggested shooting it off at the flagpole installation ceremony.

·  November 2, 2000 – The flagpole dedication will take place on Veterans Day. Frank Lewis’s wool flag will be flown for the ceremony but a weather resistant flag will otherwise be flown. Jim Anderson will fire the cannon. Women’s Club will provide cookies, punch, and coffee.

·  2001 – The recycling program was started in 2001 by Bud Glaser as way to help with cost of new roof for community hall and has since continued as a way to help the various clubs and others for the good of the community.

·  August 10, 2001 – Motion passed to purchase snap-lock roofing material for $4,158. The metal color chosen was Evergreen. The roof would have cost about $25,000 but volunteer labor will bring the cost down significantly.

·  November 1, 2001 – The roof will not be started until the insurance papers are completed, but it is believed that with the volunteer labor it will cost about $6,000.

·  January 3, 2002 – Garden Club will donate a plant for a door prize at each Community Club meeting.

·  January 11, 2002 – Motion passed to raise dues from $5 to $10 per person.

·  April 12, 2002 – Roofing material has been ordered and paid for. Motion passed to accept a bid of $4,200 to strip and replace the roof.

·  May 2, 2002 – Theatre Club issued challenge to other clubs to donate up to $500 for roof.

·  June 6, 2002 – Garden Club, Women’s Club, and Grange all accepted Theatre Club’s challenge to donate $500 to the roof fund. Tony Enslow presented his idea of a sign across the street as his Eagle Scout project.

·  June 14, 2002 – Bud Glaser donated $200 to the roof fund from collecting aluminum cans.

·  2002 Citizen of the Year – Jim and Ruth Irish. Honored Citizens – Karla Lortz, Ginny and Bob Briesmeister, and Allison Bowen.

·  December 5, 2002 – Chair racks are in place. Kiosk is done.

·  January 10, 2003 – Carla Lortz is preparing a heath book and was featured on Martha Stewart TV show.

·  May 9, 2003 – Eleanor Pranger, Diane Myers, and Denise Beckwith prepared a photo album of the historic Community hall contents and displays. Motion carried to allow Garden Club to extend the garden area approximately 8 feet further into the parking area and add landscaping and benches.

·  June 26, 2003 – Kitchen flooring and countertop installed.

·  September 12, 2003 – Mike Callahan had an article complete with photos of the Apple Squeeze published in the County Extra magazine’s September issue.

·  2003 Citizen of the Year – Sandy Ball. Honored Citizens – Pat LeClair, Jerry Christensen, Elizabeth Berndt, and Chester Streckenbach (posthumously).

·  November 14, 2003 – Elizabeth Berndt and committee decorated a Christmas tree, entitled “Island Mystique” for the MGH Fantasy Forest. Invoices total $600. HICC and various clubs sponsored the tree which is on display at Zinh’s. Taylor Shellfish Co. purchased the tree.

·  May 6, 2004 – The seating along the north and south walls will be removed, the floor sanded and painted, then the seats returned prior to the refinishing of the main floor.

·  June 3, 2004 – The floor has been refishined. Official permit has been obtained to close the bridge for 15 to 20 minutes on June 11 to take photos. They will be taken from a plane, a boat, and on the bridge.

·  June 11, 2004 – Approximately 104 people and one dog were present for the bridge photo. The photo is to be applied to t-shirts and other items for fund raising.

·  October 8- 2004 – Thanks to Eleanor Pranger for activities designed to secure a sign for Harstine Island on Highway 3.

·  2004 Citizen of the Year – John and Kathy Doherty. Honored Citizens – Willa Smith, Marlene Echaniz, and Philura Jarrell (posthumously).

·  November 4, 2004 – Elizabeth Berendt has assembled an island choir.

·  April 8, 2005 – Gerri Lewis provided the known history of the two cemeteries on the island. The largest one is off Ballow Road and is one acre in size. The Jarrell Cove cemetery is a half acre, deeded to the residents of Harstine Island and the direct descendants of the Jacob Wingert family. Eleanor Pranger was thanked for all her work in getting the county to replace on Highway 3 the Harstine Island signs.

·  September 1, 2005 – Work has begun on the parking lot kiosk, the trash can shelter and storage extension.

·  October 14, 2005 – Citizen of the Year – Barbara LaJune. HHonored citizens – Ester Goetsch (posthumously), Brenda Stainbrook, and Mike and Judy Callaghan.

·  November 3, 2005 – The island’s two mailboxes were removed due to a nation- wide program to reduce rural boxes.

·  January 13, 2006 – lst year for annual Chili Cook-Off. Residents displeased that mailboxes have been removed from island.

·  February 10, 2006 – Frank and Gerri Lewis presented HICC with a framed original blueprint of Harstene One, a log ferry, and the island’s first ferry.

·  March 2006 – Irish Pub night with Backwoods Irish program.

·  2006 Citizen of the Year – Mike and Linda Benson. Honored Citizens – Fred Ebey, Tom and Mary Ryan, and Eleanor Pranger.

·  Scrapbook – John Cooper article – December 16, 2006 – extended and wide spread power outage began December 14. No phone service or power. Choir performance was planned for 16th. Elizabeth Berndt drove to homes to say “show must go on.” Power to be provided by generator. During performance Colleen Benson (volunteer firefighter) heard something like “frying bacon.” Fire was imminent as generator apparently caused wiring to overheat. Hall vacated – choir concluded the final song for audience out of doors. Hall closed until rewiring done. Reopened by December 24.

·  March 9, 2007 – The first annual Indoor Garage Sale planned for March 24. “This Hall is the social focal point of our Island Community. It is unique, and represents a great example of a community coming together for the purpose of socializing and supporting one another.”

·  2007 Citizen of the Year – Mary Nichols. Honored citizens – Pam Niemi Wood and B.J. Beauchene.

·  July 13, 2007 – Thanks to oversight of Gary Benz and Jim Irving the electrical system upgrade is nearly complete.

·  2008 Citizen of the Year – Bud Glaser. Honored Citizens – Della Rogers, Pat LeClair, and Judy Callaghan.

·  2009 – Sandy has already done. Inquiring Minds started. 2009 Citizen of the Year – Gary Benz. Honored Citizens – Marlene Echaniz, Gerri Lewis, and Jim Irving.

·  January 2010 – All Island Eyes Network is the new face of Neighborhood Watch.

·  February 4, 2010 – Karla Lortz and Mike Plomski donated new projection screen.

·  February 12, 2010 – HICC website designed by Bill Burrows.

·  March 4, 2010 – IRS has approved HICC as a 501c3 organization effective date as of February 17, 1941. Committee was established to direct the use of funds from Chase Estate. The funds are to be used by Women’s Club Scholarship Program to fund scholarships for residents of Harstine Island. The ferry steering wheel (helm) has been repaired by Jim Irving and hung on the hall wall. The Key will be placed in a shadow box by Gary Benz and hung on the wall.

·  May 14, 2010 – Island residents are asked to submit photos for a contest to create the 2011 HICC calendar. Kayce Benson assembled the materials and Karla Lortz had them printed.

·  August 5, 2010 – There is a new wild cat rescue being opened on the island known by Wild Felid Advocacy Center of Washington.

·  2010 – Citizens of the Year - Dudley and Anne Panchot. Honored Citizens – Mike Plomski, Arlen Morris, and Charley Allison (posthumously).

·  November 12, 2010 – A new range and hood have been installed.

·  Missing 2011 Minutes.

·  2011 – Citizen of the Year – Bill Burrows. Honored Citizens – Lynn Fish, Sandy Murphy, and Sam Edgin (posthumously).

·  October 25, 2011 – First HPC meeting to prepare for Centennial of hall. Sandy Murphy as chair. Members include Bill Burrows, Gary Benz, Shelleen and Mark Mathews, and Mike Burdick.

·  April 17, 2013 – Terry Evans of Evans Construction examined the foundation, floor, walls, and roof framing of the hall. The foundation is block and post construction on grade. The building site was not leveled so the blocks or granite stones are placed at measured intervals with each support post cut to length. Some of the floor beams are logs, dimensionally flattened top and bottom. The floor joists are full dimension plus or minus, rough cut Douglas fir 2 x 8. Some joists are hued at the bearing point where they meet the beams. The sub floor is diagonal laid ship lap covered with tongue and groove finished flooring. The main hall interior walls are 2 x 4 wood studs, balloon framing with horizontally applied random length Douglas Fir Wainscoting. The exterior is sheathed with horizontally applied 1 x 5 random length fir sheathing. The roof is gable ridge board and rafter with horizontal collar tie rafter to rafter, diagonally braced from ceiling joist to rafter. Roofing is painted steed standing seam panels. The hall has two side shed style additions, the kitchen with serving area, bathrooms and stage area. The stage area has a concrete foundation/basement. The side shed roofs put additional load on the main building walls where they attach. The building has survived all the earthquakes between 1914 and now, including the largest recorded the past 100 years. A 7.1 quake centered near Olympia in 1949.

·  May 31, 2012 – Stationery and thank you cards using our new John Cooper logo have been printed by Chuck Estes at no cost to HICC.

·  July 5, 2012 – The Board authorized expenditure of $2,750 to purchase the time capsule (including tax and installation) for the 2014 Centennial. Capsule expense was $1,631.50 leaving $1,000 plus for installation expenses. Notecards will be sold to help defray this cost.

·  September 2012 – Awarded a “Place of Historic Interest” plaque which will be placed on building at a dedication after hall painted.

·  October 4, 2012 – The first annual Pie Contest proposed by Bill Shoaf was held during Farmers Market on September 29 raised $430. Twenty pies were entered – every piece was sold.

·  October 12, 2012 – Citizen of the Year – Jim Irving. Honored Citizens – Judy Moore, Joye Robinson, and Billie Fish.

·  The April 17, 2013 report needs to be cut and pasted to correct placement after 2012.
