History of São Paulo

Piratininga turned Sao Paulo: the school is now a metropolis

The Jesuit priests José de Anchieta and Manoel da Nobrega climbed the Mountain of the Sea, back in 1553, to seek a safe place to live and evangelize the Indians. Upon reaching the plateau Piratininga found the sweet spot. He was "as cold and temperate airs in Spain" and "a land very healthy, fresh and good water."

Religious built a school on a small hill next to Tamanduateí and Anhangabaú, where they celebrated mass. That was on January 25, 1554, which marks the anniversary of St. Paul. Nearly five centuries later, the town of Piratininga became a city of 11 million inhabitants. From those times, there are only the foundations of the building made by the priests and Indians in Pateo the college.

Piratininga took 157 years to become a town called São Paulo, a decision ratified by the King of Portugal. At that time, California was still the starting point of the flags, expeditions that cut the interior of Brazil. Had as objective the search for precious minerals and the imprisonment of Indians to work as slaves in mines and plantations.

In 1815 the city became capital of the Province of São Paulo. But only twelve years later would earn his first college of Law in San Francisco Largo. Since then, California has become a political and intellectual core of the country. But only become a major economic center with the expansion of coffee production in the late nineteenth century. Immigrants came from all over the world to work in fields and later in the growing industrial city. More than half of city dwellers in the mid-1890s, was formed by immigrants.

In early 1930, the elite of the State of Sao Paulo clashed with the federal government. The result was the Constitutional Revolution of 1932, which erupted on July 9 (today's state holiday). The fighting lasted three weeks and Paul was defeated. The state was isolated on the political scene, but did not prevent the flourishing of educational institutions. In 1935 created the University of São Paulo, which was later given teachers as the French anthropologist Levi-Strauss.

In the 1940s, São Paulo also won major urban interventions, mainly in the road. The industry has become the main economic engine of the city. The need for more manpower in these two fronts brought several Brazilian states, mainly the northeast.

In the 1970s, the service sector has gained greater prominence in the economy of São Paulo. The industries have migrated to cities in Greater São Paulo such as the ABCD (Santo Andre, Sao Bernardo do Campo, Sao Caetano do Sul and Diadema). Today, the state capital is the financial center of Latin America and it still receives with open arms Brazilians and foreigners who work and live in São Paulo, in an environment of tolerance and respect for diversity of faiths, ethnicities, sexual orientations and tribes.

Climate

São Paulo does not do justice to the nickname "city of mist." According to the survey "Meteorology and Air Pollution in Sao Paulo", conducted by the University of São Paulo, the average temperature increase over the past 40 years have led to a reduction in the frequency of drizzle and fog in the city.

The climate is tropical of altitude, characterized by summer rainfall and average annual temperature between 19 C and 27 ° C. But all the seasons can be seen in a single day in Sao Paulo. The city may dawn sunny and cloudless and finish the day with a thunderstorm. Therefore, it is common to see Sao Paulo with coats and umbrellas on hot days.

These days are more common during the summer, when rain usually falls in late afternoon, relieving the heat. In autumn, the temperature is mild, averaging around 23 º C. Winter usually has dry and sunny, with temperatures rarely drop below 15 º C. In the spring, the days are very hot and dry.
