1The source documents for this unit standard are the Māori text Te Tiriti o Waitangi and the English text The Treaty of Waitangi. For the purpose of this unit standard the generic term Te Tiriti refers to both texts.

2Glossary

Māori Leader refers to a Māori person considered a leader by Māori in a specific context. Their development is defined as their personal journey through the education system and how this influenced and shaped them for the leadership role(s) they have held or currently hold.

Outcomes and evidence requirements

Outcome 1

Compare and contrast educational, socio-cultural, political and economic trends and attitudes of Māori and non-Māori leading to the signing of Te Tiriti and its subsequent impact up to 1850.

Evidence requirements

1.1The educational, socio-cultural, political and economic trends and conditions of Māori and non-Māori are separately identified throughout this era.

1.2Attitudes of Māori and non-Māori are analysed in relation to educational, socio-cultural, political and economic trends.

1.3Events that led to the signing of Te Tiriti are defined, tracked and traced in relation to its subsequent impact on society.

Outcome 2

Chart the educational development of Māori from 1840 through to the present day.

Evidence requirements

2.1Educational legislation is investigated from the signing of Te Tiriti to the present day and related to Māori development.

2.2The educational history of a selected Māori leader is studied and related to their development.
