PLENARY SPEAKERS

Dr Frederick Leungis a mathematics educator from the Faculty of Education of the University of Hong Kong, and was Dean of the Faculty between 1996 and 2002. His major research interests are in the comparison of mathematics education in different countries, and in the influence of different cultures on teaching and learning. He is the principal investigator of a number of major research projects, including the Hong Kong component of TIMSS and the TIMSS 1999 Video Study. Dr. Leung is one of the editors of the Second International Handbook on Mathematics Education, and is also author of a series of localsecondary mathematics textbooks which is most widely used in the territory. He served as a consultant for a number of educational projects for UNESCO and the World Bank, and he is a member of the Executive Committee of the International Commission on Mathematical Instruction (ICMI). See his homepage at

Ms Lulama Mbane is a Grade 7 mathematics teacher at FikileBhenguPrimary School in Mdantsane, Eastern Cape. Lulu, as she is popularly known has been teaching for about 30 years and was one of the mathematics teachers who were selected by the Primary Mathematics Project in 1992 to do a program in mathematics teaching at LeedsUniversity in the UK. She obtained a Senior Primary Teachers Diploma from RhodesUniversity in 1994 and a B.Ed (Foundation and Intermediate Phase) with distinction from the University of Fort Hare in 2003. She is a convener of the Mdantsane Schools Community Project. Lulu is not only a committed mathematics educator; she is also a leader in her community. She is an active member of the Community Police Forum and she initiated a community project which analyses unemployment levels and training needs of Mdantsane residents. One of Lulu’s former lecturers at the University of Fort Hare described her as a grass-roots person and an excellent primary school teacher of mathematics, science and technology.

Professor Peter Galbraith began his professional activity as a secondary mathematics teacher in Victoria, Australia, and subsequently taught mathematics at MelbourneStateUniversity, before taking a position at the University of Queensland in Teacher Education where he spent the bulk of his academic life. While he has been involved in a wide variety of research activities (for example involving the use of technology in the teaching and learning of mathematics) his first love has always been in the field of Applications and Mathematical Modelling - specifically to help students of mathematics apply their knowledge to real situations, and to their life outside the classroom. Prof.Galbraith is the current President of the International Community for the Teaching of Mathematical Modelling and Applications (ICTMA Group) and a member of the executive committee of the International Commission for Mathematical Instruction (ICMI). You can learn more by going to his homepage

Professor Nigel Bishop is the current President of the South African Mathematical Society (SAMS)and a professor of Applied Mathematics at the University of South Africa (UNISA). He studied mathematics at the University of Cambridge, and then moved to Southampton where he obtained his PhD. He has wide international experience, with much of his research work having been undertaken in collaboration with people in Europe, India and U.S.A. He has authored over 50 scientific articles, and 3 books. His main research interest is black hole theory. His work relies on a number of computer applications and techniques, including numerical computation, parallel processing and, in particular, computer algebra. See his homepage at
