A synopsis of patterns for the Xmas Wolley / Egg-Sucking Leach Fly Swap 2002:

- Chicago, IL

Pattern #1 – Inverse Chartreuse Egg Sucking Leach – 2 enclosed

Tail – White Marabou

Body – Chartreuse Chenille

Hackle – Light Gray

Head – Black Chenile

Thread – Black 6/0

Tag – Red Floss (I use red tags to denote weighted flies)

Weighted – one layer back to front wrap 0.15 lead.

Comments – This is a variation of the traditional Egg Sucking Leach colors, being an inverse with dark head and light body. It is my answer to the “Dark Day, Dark Fly, Light Day, Light Fly” adage.

Pattern #2 – Red & Black Wolley Bugger – 1 enclosed

Tail – Black Marabou

Body – Red Chenille

Hackle – Black

Thread – Black 6/0

Comments – This is my salmon shotgun, and at least one of you who reads my reports asked for it! I first noticed another angler fishing this pattern at the Root River in Racine WI. He sat right next to me and pulled out 2 Kings and a Brown, while I caught nothing that day. In a mad dash I had a guy out west tie a whole mess of these for me, and when I got the materials I tied even more. Needless to say, roughly half the Coho Salmon I landed this year came on this pattern!

Pattern #3 – Purple Krystal Body Wolley Bugger – 1 enclosed

Tail – Hot Purple Marabou

Body – Med Purple Krystal Flash Chenille

Hackle – Black

Thread – Black 6/0

Comments – I came across the Krystal Flash Chenille and thought it just looked “insecty”. Well, I tied up about 5 of these late in the season and fished them; they look GREAT underwater. This was the pattern I used at the mouth of the Pike River, flycasting into Lake Michigan, where I caught the first Brown Trout of my life; a 9 lb male; you can check him out at -
