1st semester Physics Final Review sheetLiang
Hey, Hey Kids…Its time for that most joyous time in every student’s lives: The Finals!!!
Yay…woo hoo.. Now that we’ve gone through the kicks and giggles, here’s the nitty gritty:
1. You will be able to have one halfsheet of 8 1/2 by 11 paper front and back for the final. This should be plenty of space and you shouldn’t have to resort to micro print.
2. The test will cover Chapter 1-11 in your text book and I will outline below, what you should know:
3. There will be about 50-75 Scantron questions, which means the Final will probably be worth around 100 points and will be about 15% of your total grade.
4. Don’t stress out too much; just remember its all stuff you had before. Focus more on what you don’t feel so familiar with. Use flash cards to study for terms. Organize terms according to what chapter they belong. For the Scantron, remember to eliminate wrong answers and make sure you don’t leave anything blank, as there is no penalty for guessing.
5. You should bring acalculatoras I have only a few to lend out
Chapter 1-What is Physics
Chapter 2-SI units and conversions
Know your metric units for Physics, converting from one unit to another (example: nano -> kilo), scientific notation, accuracy vs precision, basic rules of sig figs, no graphing
Chapter 3-Motion
particle Diagrams, know difference between velocity and acceleration, instantaneous vs average velocity
Chapter 4 - vectors
Adding and subtracting vectors, resultant, Pythagorean theorem, solving for sides and angles of right triangles by trigonometry
Chapter 5-Kinematics
Don’t worry about the graphing stuff, concentrate on the kinematics equations to solve for postion, time, velocity, and acceleration
Chapter 6-Forces
Newton’s 3 laws of motion, Types of forces, Inertia, equilibrium, F=ma, difference between mass and weight, Types of friction: static vs kinetic, calculating friction, terminal velocity, 4 fundamental forces, Tension
Chapter 7-projetile motion
Calculating time in air, maximum height, distance traveled, Circular motion: centripetal acceleration and force,
Chapter 8- Newton’s Law of gravitation
Calculating the force of gravity, the effect of changing mass and radius of orbiting object. Velocity necessary to stay in orbit
Chapter 9-Momentum
Impulse vs force vs momentum, no angular momentum, conservation of momentum: when two objects collide and stick to each other
Chapter 10- Energy
Forms of energy: Work, kinetic, potential. Work done in an angle, Power, Machines-types, mechanical advantage vs Ideal mechanical advantage vs efficiency
Chapter 11-More energy
Conservation of energy: pendulum problems, inelastic (momentum conserved) vs elastic (kinetic energy conserved) collisions
Best of luck, feel free to contact me if you have questions.
