1. Gender Issues
Prof Helen Allan, Professor in Nursing, School of Health and Education, Middlesex University
This workshop will consider the role of gender in shaping attitudes to FGM. Participants will be presented briefly theories of gender and the concept of patriarchy. Two research studies where gender has played at important part in determining women’s experiences of health care will be presented. The first is a doctoral study research which explored the interacting effects of the veil, gender and Islam on women’s roles in nursing in the Saudi Arabian context. The second is a doctoral study which explored women’s experiences of medical consultations in follow-up oncology clinics following treatment for cancer of the rectum, anus, vagina and perineum. The effects of gender will be discussed in the global context and locally considering other cross sectional factors such as age, social class and culture which may intersect with gender to constrain women’s health choices and their experiences of providing care to women undergoing FGM. / Room C107

3. Talking about FGM in Sexual Health

This session aims to cover discussing FGM with women in a sexual health clinic. It will address the questions and problems encountered in women who have had FGM, and the management and safeguarding issues raised, and the recording of cases for the Department Health.
This workshop will be illustrated with case scenarios to highlight the issues encountered by a nurse working in sexual health. / Room C110
4. Cultural Perspective of FGM
Theresa Bourne, Associate Professor (Practice) Midwifery and Undergraduate Medical Studies,School of Health and Education, Middlesex University
This workshop will seek to explore some of the cultural perspectives of FGM. It will also consider initiatives that have supported cultural changes to this practice both internationally and nationally.
Additionally, some of the difficulties in discourse around this subject within practicing communities will be highlighted.
It is intended that although some material will be presented that this will provide the opportunity for discussion and sharing. / Room C111

9. Talking to Children About FGM

This interactive workshop will provide a brief overview of the research literature surrounding this area and highlight relevant policies and procedures. Delegates will be asked to apply their own knowledge and experience to workshop activities looking at how to talk to different age groups about FGM. / Room C111
